It's four games into the season. Hardly a time to forget your principles and start pumping it long.it will take time for players to get used to each other, don't listen to halfwits rattling on about extended pre season, it mean absolutely nothing.

Exactly. Liverpool have struggled first two games, FFS Jürgen get back to 4-4-2. I'll bet you Derek Adams isn't thinking about going posession based if his hoofball doesn't work.

I am not suggesting playing hoof just mixing it up playing the channels the occasional punt from the keeper. Because constant slow side movement is the best time waster for the opposition there is

Posession means little unless it gets results. But that posession is what Hughes believes in. We've been dicked by two last minute goals, the law of averages says this won't happen again too many times. Last night was frustrating but there were positives in how we are looking to keep the ball under our control.

That's the team getting used to each other. Angol is the only striker we have who runs the channels, Cook and Oliver don't really do it. If Angol was upfront last you'd have seen us go down the channels. No point using the channels if it doesn't suit your attack. And running the channels is part of Walkers game. If Osadebe and Eisa were fit it could aid Oliver as both are pretty quick and like to get down the line, this in turn allows both fullbacks to get forward. Just unfortunate that our injuries are to players in similar areas.

I always liked the reverse stumpless Xmas tree formation but only when we've had a sending off. 2/3/4

We have a manager who has played at the highest levels; who has been coached by some of the best; who has managed in one of the best leagues in the world; who has managed at the international level: who is aided and abetted by a strong coach who himself has years of experience in the lower leagues. I suspect that between them, to accompany their many oaching badges and their years of experience, they have also forgotten more about football than the amateur managers on here have ever known. Our manager has assembled a squad which is there to do a job for him and they're not just a ragtag collection of players dragged in off the streets. Hughes and Hodges see them on the training pitches most days of the week. No doubt, he knows their strengths, their weaknesses and their limitations and how he expects the game to be played.

And yet on here, in this and other threads, some are suggesting they have a simple and easy solution to the team's problems .... if only Hughes would embrace their formation, their team selection and their tactics. Maybe they could use their time better by popping down to Rawdon Meadows on the next training day and asking Hughes and Hodges if they can share their ideas with them? You never know!

400 games managed at premiership level, think that puts him 7th in the table of games managed at that level. But enough of that, just go 4-4-2.......

    Lol!

Yes, he signed Crichlow as a ball playing centre back and factored in that Smallwood can drop in as a third centre back at times to allow the team to play expansive passing football AND offer protection to the defence, but forgot little details like that...

    RAM THEM INTO A 442!

4-4-2 suits us best with the players we have fit.

back four is known. Could start Hendrie over Halliday and Foulds over Ridehalgh based on last night.

Smallwood in CM alongside East, Gillead or Songoo. Id go Gilly for his legs.

Chapman on RM and Banks LM. Cook or Oliver with Harratt or Angol upfront.

Nice balance. Let partnerships develop. Stop trying to be something we are not. Create chances, no more Derek Adams 4-2-3-1 bore.

we’re too slow, dull and predictable. Need width and pace - wingers.

Experience certainly, but any success? Neither Hughes or Hodges in their considerable management careers has won anything. No promotions, no cups, nothing. Hughes usually has a clear out and introduces a large number of new players, sometimes more than once, depending on how long he has stayed at a particular club. He has tended to build large squads and rotate players regularly. But this has never brought any tangible success. He is continuing this pattern at VP.
Perhaps this time he will be successful and I hope he will. But history is not on his, or our, side.

To be fair to him he's managing in the top division of world football with teams not fancied to win anything. Not that it makes any difference to Hughes being successful here. Probably be sacked by christmas lol.

in the same way the shilling worked fine about 40 years ago. 4-4-2 can be effective but its largely dinosaur football now and easily beaten.

I've nothing against the bloke in the slightest. He's a perfect gentleman and conducts himself very professionally. But there are countless examples of great players who didn't make great managers despite seemingly having all the experience you would need. I once had lunch with Norman Hunter and asked him about his management career and his time at City in particular. There was another perfect gentleman by the way. He said he was certain he'd make a good manager, but was quite candid about the fact that usually things didn't work out as he'd expected and he didn't know why. He smiled and said something like, 'in all honesty I couldn't do it.'
I'm not writing Hughes off after a couple of games by any means, but I am tempering my expectations a little. He's been very unlucky with the injuries we've had, but almost every side I've seen promoted from the lower divisions over the years have been far more direct than the style he seems to favour. As I've said elsewhere, I hope he can get the balance right and lead us to some long-awaited success.

Didn’t he win a league cup with Blackburn? That’s not bad going considering their objectives at that time we’re probably surviving.

I was hoping he wouldn't play Angol out wide but he seems to like it. Tempering your expectations is a very good idea, I'm not worried so far because i can see positives in what we're trying to do.

If MH doesn't go 4-4-2 there is no point whatsoever in playing Oliver. That's no slight on Oliver, but not hard to check his history to see that he is far more effective in this formation.

If MH is a rigid 4-2-3-1 man, then a pointless expensive signing.

It doesn’t have to be 442 433 is mor flexible and can produce the width with a bit more control
