Curtis Tilt

Like it or not three of them were part of the second best defence on league two last year. Let’s judge it when the defence is complete for the season.

 

Tilt stood out for me when we played them (and the odd game I’ve watched on tv when we’ve not played), as I quickly noticed his traits - and the way he plays, (me being an ex striker).

I’ve not seen anyone do what he does for a very long time. It’s like old school defending.

A lot of his defending relies on him disregarding the ball, looking at where his man is, then very blatantly getting in front of his man and blocking off the strikers run.

Now you could say that is very good defending experience, or, is it because he doesn’t have the legs to keep up with them?? Your guess is as good as mine.

I don’t have any clips to back this up, but believe me, this is what he does a hell of a lot.

Yeah but we couldn't afford the assets so we signed Tilt instead.

His stats look decent

 

A 33 year old Salford defender on a 2 year deal.

That'll get pulses racing.

Maybe he can be the defensive leader, but... looks very mediocre on paper.

That’s the bit that worries me they have given him a two year deal and wouldn’t Smallwood can’t understand it.

If they wanted to offer a 2 year contract to a decent L2 defender they could have offered it to Stubbs...

 

If he’s come in as cover then fine , if he’s coming in as first choice then I have big reservations , however better than Kelly for sure .

 

I think some people have forgotten we've moved up a division. We can't be signing average players in the division below at the wrong end of their career otherwise we won't be at this level long.

If we were still in league two this signing would be viewed differently.

 

He'd still be our best centre half if we'd kept him. That's the worrying part.

He was also in the L2 team of the week a few times.

 

If he's better than Kelly and coming in as cover it feels like we're already over stocked in the "cover" centre backs with Byrne almost certainly in that list if we're to make any impression in this division.

Someone will have to play so given Baldwin is now almost certainly likely to make the starting line up we'd still need another 2 to make a minimum of 6 just so that we aren't relying on the other 3 for long periods.

I don’t know this player so will be giving him the benefit of the doubt. Nevertheless, the management do think that he is player that would be good for us. We have to trust them, their own careers lives or dies on these type of decisions. I don’t like condemning players before they have pulled a shirt on. What he has done in the past is of no concern. This is a different club, different players and manager therefore we have to wait and see how he fits in.

 

This is my concern. Even if the other 2 CB’s we sign are of good quality we’re still only a couple of injuries/suspensions away from relying on last seasons defence plus Tilt which doesn’t inspire a great deal of confidence. If we’re playing with 3 CB’s at least 4 of them need to be first-team ready and we’re going to end up with 2 at best.
