It's probably a case by case thing and life moves quick. Power and Tilt lets face it could well retire either next summer or the one after, so seeing out your final seasons with minimal travel and going home to your kids every night is a valid need in my book. Sounded like Tilt has been renting out places for the last 12 years whilst his wife and kids were staying put in the family home in Birmingham. Younger lads with fewer ties will be up and down the country with little fuss you'd imagine?

Something that the club should consider going forward too i guess? When vetting a player or talking to them about their family life, the commute or relocate commitment should come in. Tbf i think a load of clubs do that now. Peterborough chairman on his pod has said before that the club wants players to have a place within a certain time or mileage of the training ground. Neville said before that Salford have it in their contracts that the players have i think it was 6 months to relocate within a certain mileage of the training ground. They had one young lad from London a few seasons back who said he was going to move up as soon as he signed. Instead every day he travelled up, he left his parked his car at Stoke station every night, got the train from London to Stoke every day for training and drove in. He was dropped when they found out, gave him a chance to move, never moved because of his ties to family and was moved on the next window.

It's a tricky one because the other side of that is when you get players that do relocate their family and then things perhaps don't work out as planned. I believe Lapslie and his wife and kids all moved up here, so it's perhaps not surprising he didn't want to move on in January when he had the opportunity to do so, even though he was way down the pecking order here at the time.

I think during the prime of a players career, they don't care as much about location, because career and/or money is the main focus. Example : Metcalfe, who’s probably moved closer to London but in turn gets a better contract and the ability to progress his career further

when a player is in decline and they know they aren't gonna be the centre of bidding wars, a move to their local area makes sense should the oppertunity arrive. Its only a topic of conversation here because it’s applicable to both Power and Tilt, two players who are in the twilight of their careers.

Don't see an issue with it to be honest, if I was given the opportunity to have a longer contract than what Im currently on, and it happened to be closer to my roots, id snap their hands off

Gambles of a footballing career i suppose? What's the average length of time a pro stays at one club these days in the lower leagues? Two seasons at best? Feels like theres far more turnaround the lower down you go so committing to the move is a gamble.

Who was that guy we had, think it was under Parkinson? He was a defender and he got stick for playing for one of the Devon clubs, but basically i think he said that his wife loved the country life down there but there were no cities, nothing to do, nowhere to visit and only a handful of clubs he could play for so he wanted to move to Manchester to keep his options open. Blunt and got his move, but i suppose thats why a lot of players life somewhere on the outskirts of London, somewhere about Derby-ish off the M1 or somewhere off the M6 around Greater Manchester.

Personally, I think the Power and Tilt situations are different. Power was still returning to his family every day and probably home by 5 (a normal working finish for most). Whereas if Tilt had to live away from his wife and kids and only saw them a few days a week, then it is totally understandable to grab a chance to finally move home with both hands. It's still strange to me, though, we've had so many players over the years, either live in the North-West (Jones, Darby, to name a few) and North East (about a million players who got a mini bus together), and it was never an issue. It feels like Power couldn't get a club, so they took the first thing that came along, and Tilt tbf was already a distance from home and got the chance to move up a level. I bet both thought all their Christmases came at once and jumped ship as soon as they could.

It's not the end of the world with older players, but we need to be careful with younger players or players at their peak, as we don't want to be forced to get rid of a valuable player for peanuts because he's crying about his commute.

    Good luck to him.

Dud well last season but seemed to run out of steam at the backend of it.

solid defender though and a good signing for them.

At the risk of being shouted down for shit-stirring. I'm convinced there was something going on behind the scenes. His reaction to Tyreik's last 3 goals was to keep his head down and walk away, while everyone else ran to celebrate. Happened about the same time as his drop off in form.
Hope he does well, seemed like a genuine guy whenever he pulled up at VP.
