I always referred to them as the Stans the other half was the Avenue. I come from the South of the City, but he comes from Bingley. I think that might have something to do with it. Although no idea how they got the name the Stans

 

Bronco may know better, but I think it comes from ‘Boring Stan the Avenue Fan’ some comment/ saying / publication by City fans in early 1980’s.

 

Always hated that. Haven't we come up in the world recently

 

It was a regular feature in the City Gent,but I don't think that was the source of the nickname.

It's unprintable what they we're called by City fans back in the 60s I can assure you it was neither Stans or Avenue was it @Kevin1954 .

Bradford City fans refer to fans of BPA as 'Stans' after a City publication named Bernard of theBantams ran a regular feature with a character named 'Boring Stan, the Avenue fan'. Avenue however have never adopted it as an official nickname

 

It certainly wasn’t as friendly, quite a heated cross City rivalry . All the schools I went to were all City orientated and Avenue fans were rare. Still days I wouldn’t swap, even though times weren’t easy in the 60’s.

I've travelled alot in France, Germany and Switzerland. Their public transport systems are superb, totally integrated so that trams and buses all connect to massive rail systems. Spending time in Zurich and Geneva, there was literally a tram stop at the end of every road. Outside of London and Manchester, maybes Edinburgh and Glasgow, the public transport in this country is utterly pathetic and third world. I now live in East Yorkshire - no trains, buses once an hour and often cancelled because staff are off sick and the companies don't employ any back ups.

 

Great point Monkey, some of the things you see abroad then you come back here, quite laughable really. Transport wise we are pretty pathetic as are a few other things. i think this country has an over inflated opinion of itself sometimes.

To be fair Rog, he said decent selection of beer. He didn't say it was a selection of decent beer, so us real ale buffs will want more clarification before we jp in.
