That's not the point though. The criticism comes from the non existent communication and not giving everyonenotice for the exact same opportunity to get down and queue up.

 

Where you have areas with significant fans of both clubs there'll always be a rivalry whether you play each other regularly or not

 

The winner. This is it, it's not about some statistic about who's played the most games against who. If anyone gets more excited to play, Oldham, Rochdale or Stockport over Burnley, Huddersfield and Leeds then they need to figure out just what football actually is. Rivalry is about the fans, the crowd, atmosphere and bragging rights rather than the players.

 

Well said Salty. There is significant Burnley supporters in Keighley and all the way through the Aire Valley.

 

I think with the amount of tickets sold and the general feel good nature around the club right now, we can win this and I think we will. I know some put more behind the league then the cup and I get that....but advancing in the cup means more money, prestige, etc.

I expect GA to put out a very strong lineup and really go for it.

 

I I bet before 1985 the majority of City fanswould declare Hudders,Town and BPA as rivals until there wonderful club entered our lives from 85 onwards and the antics of there loving fans .

 

I'm gonna go against the grain here, I'm looking forward to the Burnley game due to them being a championship side but for me there's no real rivalry. I can't see many if any Burnley fans saying they can't wait to reignite their rivalry with Bradford. Not even really that close, about an hour away. And the fact we've hardly played them in my time watching city does clearly have a bearing on that.

 

How many can remember the 59/60 cup where city drew the game with jimmy Mcilroy calling VP a mud heap.and the massive gate at Turf moor for the replay.
We were winning the home game but the referee found a massive amount of injury time

 

Is that the one with the legendary traffic jam all the way to Burnley?

 

Again though, around Keighley it's different. Areas of shared support have their rivalry even if it's not necessarily reflected through the whole support base and that can give the games an edge. There are lots of facets to rivalry though, like us and Stockport, no real shared areas of support but a history of trouble in the 70s and 80s which give the games an edge. We don't play Leeds very often but I think of them as local rivals and so do the Leeds fans based in Shipley, Pudsey, farsley, whereas those Leeds fans in east or south Leeds probably couldn't give a stuff about us

 

I think a bit like Leeds it’s a bit of a it depends where you are from and not a clear cut rivalry, very much depends who you ask. Most Leeds fans don’t give a shiny shite but most City fans would call them out rivals even if it’s one sided. Sorry but if you want and asked most city fans if a team like Rochdale or Oldham are our rivals I doubt they would consider it one, can’t imagine many city fans getting excited about a cup draw against one of those teams. When we drew Rochdale in round 1, not once was the term rivalry mentioned on here. It was seen as a good chance to qualify nothing else.

 

Not for me mate, about as much a rival as Oldham. A rivalry is built up over decades of fixtures, games and experiences that fans can look back on. We've hardly played them in the last 40 odd years that I can remember, probably about half a dozen times.

 

Aas I said, depends who you mix with. I've always considered Burnley a rival spending a lot of time around Keighley and Leeds fans in Pudsey Shipley and shared areas are the same

 

Was there Park. Burnley were League 1 (now Premiership) champions and we were 2-1 up until that very, very late equaliser.
Was at Turf Moor for the replay 52k crowd where we were comfortably beaten 5-0.

Burnley had some great players then, Ray Pointer, Jimmy McIlroy, John Connelly, Harris, McDonald, Adamson, Miller, Elder plus the rest.

 

They did we were so unlucky not to clinch it at VP.

 

Years ago,City's only real rivals were Park Avenue,and maybe Halifax.All other local teams always seemed to be in a different division.

 

I'm not sure that's too relevant though for lower league sides that change divisions frequently which is probably why this discussion, usually featuring different sides, appears every year.

We could go back to any set period during my time watching City (80s onwards) and usually every one of the periods will have a different 'rival'.

For instance, in the 80s and 90s alone there's been Stockport, Barnsley, Leeds, Burnley, Huddersfield and probably a good few more that the foggy brain can't quite recall so when one of them pops back as a fixture after a good time away all the memories come flooding back and it definitely feels slightly different to a 'normal' match.

Whether that means it's an actual rivalry though is clearly open for debate and ones own interpretation.

 

Your last paragraph is fair comment, clearly my parameters for a rivalry differ to others. Has to be something that stirs the emotions and I only get that when we play Leeds, even though really we aren't rivals, just happen to be near neighbours. We 'hate' them, their fan base doesn't give a shit.
