Only 1 upset tonight, when nearly every team is making at least 5 or 6 changes it probably does make upsets harder as it probably widens the gap more. As long as we don't make 7 or 8 changes I still think we've got a good chance as I can see Burnley making at least 9 changes.

The 3rd round draw is seeded so that the 8 Premiership teams joining the competition at this stage will be kept apart.

 

Why when we know they'll send their U21s or 3rd team along? This really pisses me off, if they don't want to take it seriously then don't seed them.

 

It’s a good thing. It increases our chances of a big money spinning draw.

 

It would just devalue the tournament if you forced them to play a full u21 side or maybe even weaker as the teams in the Champions League have a UEFA youth league match. If that happens the sponsors and TV companies would be very unhappy and demand refunds, if the TV money goes the EFL has a huge financial black hole to fill.

People might not like it or want to accept it the reality is without these big premier league sides the EFL Cup is nothing and financially the EFL is much weaker.

Making these teams seeds actually can help clubs like us as it increases the chances of drawing one of these big clubs.

The only way to avoid the seeding without destroying the competition would be a complicated draw with skipping teams or automatically allocating teams a draw based on what is left

 

If they don't enter the competition doesn't exist. The money goes from it and the Europa League place would go so what would be the point of the competition

I see your point, but by the same token a draw against a PL team that is only in it half-arsed becomes less of a big draw, and time the glamour of playing a PL's 3rd string team will wear off and devalue the competition anyway. Case in point, playing an ex-PL team fully expected to be in the mix for going back up has seen us offer £5 tickets to put bums on seats. And because we probably know that they too will be putting in effectively what are their reserves. Hell, I'm only trailing over because of it (cue Attendance Police). Had we slung a £25+ price on this game the attendance would likely be halved if not more.

I still remember an era where the League Cup was held in much higher regard, so maybe I'm just being an old git remembering the "good old days". But if the FL are going to seed PL teams, the least they could do is to require them to actually take it more seriously and not just as a run-out for their bench warmers.
