Surely it is down the privately run Port of Dover etc to make sure the facilities are there and they arrange the staffing witht he French rather than asking the UK government to pay for the £33m improvements that are needed.

Wait until next year when Biometric checks are needed to enter the EU, everyone will have to get out of their car/bus before getting on the ferry or train.

Not sure but the articles I've read and what I've seen on TV they were manned by French customs, or should have been.

they are manned by French customs but the facilities need providing by the Port, they asked the government to pay. Plus they need to liaise better with the French authorities to make sure in advance that there are enough staff working

Is the port of Dover run by a private company if so why would the government pay, seems strange that after the excuses why they were not all manned up there were enough French (6 I believe) personnel to man the vacant positions.
