Andy Cook and his future at City (with Poll)

Discussion in 'City Talk' started by Kevin1954, Aug 5, 2025.

?

What is the likely future for Andy Cook

  1. Essential starter (20+ goals a season Or ratio about 1:2)

  2. Important Starter (15+ goals a season Or ratio about 1:3)

  3. Starter but far less influential (10+ goals a season Or ratio 1:4.5)

  4. Impact sub (Success gets important goals)

  5. Sub (Little impact can’t find the net often enough)

  6. Never makes sufficient recovery to feature in a meaningful way

Actually I would still start with the muscular, fast, strong running Humphry’s. He either scores, and/or he wears down the defence.
On comes Swan with 20 minutes + TAO. Different style, and fresh, he cleverly picks the opening, and scores.
We still need to nurse Cookie back.
    Somewhere out there is Kavanagh.
A joy to have four strikers with different attributes, with lots of potential.

Kavanagh is getting nowhere near this season and it's my guess he'll be back in league two the next time he's starting league games.

I’m not so sure about that. It’s a long season and if a couple of our other strikers got injured I think Kav will have a role.Maybe, as you intimate, more off the bench than starting but I wouldn’t rule him out starting the odd game later in the season when other players are getting tired and nursing niggles.
GA seems to like him, particularly his relentless pressing ability.

All the strikers will get time through form and fitness. I have a feeling this might be another GA fib that he's told fairly often in the media over his City stint, the whole "Humphrys is a striker" thing. I reckon when Cook and Kav are fit, we will see him wider more than up top.

But even if its not, he is on terrible form and cant just have a starting slot because he runs wide into space and makes sure the keepers gloves are working. If he doesn't score he'll find the bench and Swan is next in line. Swan is another who had some fitness question marks from his time at Mansfield, seemed to randomly pick up little issues from time to time, but another who runs hot and cold with form too often and has found the bench a lot in his career. Humphrys 26 league starts for Barnsley last season was the most in his career to date, he's another that has had a little habit of picking up something that will lead to a game or two out or managers benching him when he doesn't bring the goods.

They'll all get a chance when someone is missing, if you said who would come in and worry the defence the most it's Cook. Same answer for who is likely to get a goal too. But he is a long long way off of having a starting run.

Kavanagh is arguably 5th choice now, behind Cook, Humphrys, Swan and Powell. He’ll be doing well to even make the bench at this rate.

Put a shift in when he played last season. Be interesting to see where he fits in when fit again. He ain't getting in before Andy Cook thats for sure.

Burns unit bet that he doesn't make 5 league appearances? Either starting or from the bench?

You couldn't see Cooks impact so don't come at me with Kavanagh!

I would add ill health, discipline record, and personal reasons as other factors, which impact on availability.
So as far as l see it five potential aspects which could reduce availability.

'Reduce availability' for some. Increase opportunity for others. I've bought into the squad game.

I really like him and on the attributes so far he can finish certainly far and away better than Kav . It’s a very very decent conundrum with Hump, Swan and soon Cookie to the mix. Certainly Cookie will come on in the early stages of his rehab as that 20 min impact player so not an initial worry who gets the two slots up top , however we dress up the formation . Keep the opponent guessing! If we arnt clear what must the opponent think?

But he isn’t. At present he’s mostly being used as an impact sub in league games, and very successfully. He is quick and energetic, so great to bring on against tiring defenders. But no guarantee that he will continue to score at his current rate across the whole season though. If he has a run of failing to score for several games then he’s likely to get rested, In which case the obvious replacement to play a similar role is Kav.

If Swan has a lean spell Humphrys would be back in and in a month or two they're both under pressure from Cook and maybe Powell.

I just don't see a scenario where Kavanagh gets a start in front of those 4 and will be lucky to even get game time from the bench at present.

You do realise league game and cup games are exactly the same in terms of a football match? Swan starts in the cup games and scores, our current starter in the league has the worst xG currently in the division. Not an attack on Humphrys just facts, with Swans goal per chance record it's reasonable to suggest that the chances we create from the off would have more chance of being converted by Swan than Humphrys.

Alexander will give him a chance as he's given every other player game time. But right now Swan is on a purple patch and Cook is starting to gain match fitness. With us playing the lone striker I can only see us havig one striker on the bench and that will be Cook, with Powell being the bench as well as cover for attacking midfield/striker.
