Andy Cook and his future at City (with Poll)

Discussion in 'City Talk' started by Kevin1954, Aug 5, 2025.

?

What is the likely future for Andy Cook

  1. Essential starter (20+ goals a season Or ratio about 1:2)

  2. Important Starter (15+ goals a season Or ratio about 1:3)

  3. Starter but far less influential (10+ goals a season Or ratio 1:4.5)

  4. Impact sub (Success gets important goals)

  5. Sub (Little impact can’t find the net often enough)

  6. Never makes sufficient recovery to feature in a meaningful way

When you look back at history then City’s all time record scorer, Bobby Campbell left Bradford before he reached 30 and had retired from football when he was still 31.
Back in the formative years of City, Frank O’Rourke the second highest scorer, then it was commented that, ‘O'Rourke was now 32 and his games and goals dried up, as he made just 46 more appearances in the final four seasons before the First World War, netting 11 goals’.
Clearly Andy is significantly older, however medical science has moved on, and perhaps he can recover. To expect him to hit a purple patch and score as regularly as he has in the past, is probably fanciful at best.
More recently James Hanson, dropped out of league football (having only scored two goals in his last season), when he was 33.
I think people need to take a reality check, if they think its a simple process of time/rehabilitation work, and that Cookie will be guaranteed to return to his pomp.

There are no guarantees of course there aren't, but he's the the type of player and character that you write off at your peril and I for one am rooting for him to prove the doubters wrong.

You lost me when you mentioned a pre war player in comparison to todays modern sportsmen and then compounded it by pretending that James Hanson had ever scored a large amount of goals.

I'll counter it with a better comparison though and with just one name. Dean Windass.

He not only hit nearly 30 for us in a single season at 36 but also fired Hull to promotion by scoring 15 goals in the championship at 38.

One thing is absolutely certain lots of people thought we were a one man team before Cook’s injury and we proved without a doubt we weren’t.
It will be great when he is available for selection and we have a choice

In my opinion Bantamshell, Cook and Humphrys would be a great pairing, Humphrys would soon get on the end of Cook's flick on's and vice versa.

If Humphrys keeps going as he did at the weekend then he will have that position nailed down.

With Cook if he does become a regular starter then we've got to change how we play as Cook can't play the number 9 role like Kavanagh did last season and how Humphrys did on Saturday and I'm not sure we want to go back to playing how we did early last season. We had all of January and nearly all of the summer window to bring in a target man style striker and we've not done it which suggests to me we want to move away from that style.

If we are needing a goal with 15-20 minutes to go then Cook is the perfect player to bring on so we can go a bit more direct and get the ball into the box quicker as the opposition sits back more.

Regarding flick-ons, Cook very rarely wins the ball in the air with his back to goal. Nor can he hold the ball up. He has no pace and little mobility. When the ball comes to him in the box, however, by whatever means, he's deadly. But I don't for a minute think that GA will change the present, very successful, system to accommodate him so I can only see him getting late in the game cameo appearances when he's fit again. And I'm sure he'll be gone in the summer, with all our best wishes.

Before we signed Humphreys GA had several conversations with him, hinting that he had underachieved in his career, possibly due to lack of application. Saturday was a good start but he needs to maintain that workrate. Danny Rowe was a very talented player but very laid back , bordering on lazy. He was capable of scoring goals at L1/2 but was happy to play for the likes of AFC Flyde where he could coast through games.

In the time Cooky has been with us he has risen to every challenge put in front of him. Yes he's 34 and coming back from a very bad injury but he has never really suffered with injuries throughout his career. When he does the contact work will be the time he and the club know his future in the game.

It's true though. If we're talking about goalscoring James Hanson retired when he left City at 27 and it was nothing to do with his age!

We won't play 2 up top though.
Our attacking and secondary pressing strengths are now with our number 10s

    Exactly.
    It could go either way.
There's also the fact that it's his last year of his contract and very unlikely at 34 going on 35 to get a new one so he needs to make sure if he wants to continue playing after Bradford City, he doesn't risk any more damage to his body.
