I think he's played in a variety of different midfield positions (and shapes), or at least that's my understanding - I think he plays wide right in a 4-4-2, or can play central attacking midfield, or where you describe, left-central midfield.

I'm only guessing, but I think he's a more natural fit as a right sided attacking midfielder.

We'll find out soon enough I guess

Exactly my thinking. Smallwood and MacDonald to compete for one role alongside Pattison with a hopefully rejuvenated Walker in front of them. Chapman/Oduor on the left, two newcomers for the right, Cook up top with another signing as backup with Oliver. That would make me pretty optimistic.
