Still don't fully comprehend that formation, back 5 with Smallwood screening them and 3 midfielders behind a solitary striker is what it looks like. We weren't so far away last year, not sure whats prompted the change. I honestly assumed a back 3 would mean a 2nd striker which would have at least made sense, this just seems extremely cautious. Early days I know but surely we can't play Halliday and Ridealgh as wingback, even Gillead and Oduor would make a little more sense.

 

Agreed - I’ve not seen the Facebook comments and hope they are not abusive. I’ve not hidden my own thoughts on Smallwood. He is ponderous slow and largely negative when in possession. When we are now effectively playing with a deep lying back 5 already, we don’t ALSO need a further deep lying covering midfielder which is about Smallwoods only “strength” as far as I can see.

Tbf anyone who plays with a back 5 needs a midfielder to sit in front of the back 3, meaning the wing backs have license to go forward and create but I think that’s where lies are main problem we can’t have ridehalgh & haliday at wing backs it just won’t work, still don’t get what the point of bringing in a England u20 international wing back to play him at centre half
