That's why they are winning so many second balls around our area. Connolly naturally drops deep alongside Pennington like he's a central defender. He needs to be 5 metres higher up the pitch on/around the edge of the D. He needs to be trying to win those second balls, blocking shots, fighting for possession.

I don't blame him necessarily, he's played as a central defender for the last 3 seasons, it's a natural thing for him to do.

Put it another way, you rarely saw Power or Metcalfe alongside Pennington. They'd be in front of them, blocking, tackling.

Sorry, but this whole centre back in midfield is just a liability for us.

 

Agree that the midfield doesn’t really work. We’re missing a more natural midfielder who can get their foot on the ball and control the game a bit more. Every game this season so far the ball has been like a hot potato and the game more like a basketball game. Lacking control in the middle of the park.

I looked at his stats on Transfermarkt this morning because I am also struggling to see what he brings that a passionate fan wouldn’t give in terms of putting his body about. His stats are pretty poor

Hopefully this serves as a reminder to GA that we desperately need to strengthen central midfield with some quality before the window closes, and not sign a 36 year old trialist whose best days are way behind him.

Looking forward to the GA excuses ..... Hard game Wednsday, long trip south etc. We have cocked up recruitment this summer with the midfield. Why do we need so many young centre backs and not one mobile, dynamic midfielder with presence. Hard season ahead i reckon.
