It’s a sorry story of privatisation sadly , platforms or CCTV driver systems not long enough for certain electric or diesel trains, no rolling stock available, track access permissions … It’s pathetic!

Gone are the days where a dozen carriages could be whipped up from the sidings along with a loco from Leeds or Bradford.

When do they decide that a train is ‘too full’?

imagine if football clubs just allowed as many fans as possible to cram into the stands. What could possibly go wrong.
One day there will be a serious tragedy on an overcrowded train and they’ll will do an enquiry lasting 20 years to make sure it never happens again.
You’d never get me on any of those ‘football’ trains. Sounds horrific AND dangerous

The rules are firstly deregulate first class then thereafter from memory there is no guidance to what is “ full” . The onus is on the train guard or in the case of D.O.O the driver, however in my experience in the London Commuter belt I have never heard or seen a train not running because it’s “full” . The problem with many trains is that people refuse to “ move down the train” therefore jamming up the doorways . If the doorways are full and the driver cannot close the doors( They are interlocked) then the train WILL NOT move until someone gets off or most likely takes their foot out of the door !
When a train is “ full and standing” it literally is but there from memory is no such thing as a train is “too full” .
    Kev does trains !

I’ve travelled on packed tube trains in London hundreds of time but the main difference there is it’s usually for only a short time and also you always have the option of waiting for the next train just a few minutes later.
In the case of the train to Carlisle , if someone tries to get on at Bingley and it’s so full they can’t get on, what do they do? There won’t be another train just after it.

Can still add more carriages and just tell people to get off carriages 1-4 or whatever if they need to get off. Happens all the time on the X-country trains.

If the club cared about it's away supporters, they'd engage with Northern Rail for trips like these well in advance to ensure fans can safely make the trip with ample space.

I'm sure if they communicated to the bosses at Northern certain dates and services that needed extra carriages they would be able to accomodate well in advance.

Another option would be to make certain trains all-ticket if they're certain it'll be busy. A bit like we have all-ticket football matches.

Once the tickets are gone, they're gone.

Ha ha ha ha the club can’t even organise its own supporters coaches. What chance have they got putting a train on?
What if it costs thousands to put another carriage on and nobody travels?

Didn't they ask people to get off at Sheffield, when we played Notts County because the train was so full

The problem with trains, unlike with a bus or plane is that you don’t need to show anyone any kind of ticket before boarding and when the train is so full the ticket inspectors don’t even attempt to walk through the carriages checking.
