I'd agree with you. OK, we don't see training but at the moment Kavanagh is ahead and played on Saturday but he didn't have a great game at all. His passing in the second half was poor, didn't give us any time attacking and even in the first half I only remember him stretching the defence and running between defenders once. I hope Smith gets his chance and hope he does well but really we need both of them to do well. We need 40 goals between him, Cook and Kavanagh this season if we're to trouble the top of the table.

Worth nothing Cook and Smith shared the pitch for 31 league games last season and linked up twice. Don't know what it is with Smith, but I wonder if there is something in him and bigger crowds? As we say, his goal return in the mickey mouse cup was fantastic.... but they were mainly against kids and not many fans in attendance. He is apparently a really impressive trainer, but matchdays he never looks confident on the pitch.

His best season in terms of goals per minutes since moving into the EFL was the covid season, he got 10 goals in 26 apps (17 starts) for Swindon. His next best season was last year with us, and that was hardly impressive. But there's 2 or 3 misses from yards out he had last season at VP that suddenly turn a naff return into a decent return and a bit more faith in him.

I think Kav is the greater prospect but Saturday exposed some of his current liabilities. He has the vision to see the killer pass but not the ability to then deliver it - hopefully GA and the team will really be working with him on this because when he drops into the hole between midfield and attack he was getting lots of opportunities to hurt MKD but couldn't pick the right ball

He gave the ball away so much on Saturday. I like that Kavs instinct was to turn and run at the defence and try get the team forward, but the pass was never there or he'd try force it too quickly.

But if his instruction is to play in the hole while defending and when he gets it, to break forward and stretch the defence before laying a pass out to the striker (which he tried a lot on Saturday).... that's all well and good but Andy Cook or Vadaine Oliver aren't really the type to be running up with him to get on the end of a through ball in 2024/2025. That tactic might be better with a combo between Kav and Young or Smith as the receiver has legs to receive or run a defender onto a through pass..... Cook or Oliver don't really have that burst of pace in spades anymore.

I wonder who the club is that Gillead has refused to join.

The club might have been better keeping quiet about Gillead the move didn’t happen so no need to publicise it

Probably because it could be revisited in the next two weeks.
If his head as been turned we have no idea what he's thinking.
Don't think he will get a look in tomorrow either.

Printing it in the T&A today makes me think the club are trying to give him a slight push. Must be awkward rocking up to training knowing the manager is happy for you to move on.

'Heard' or saw the tweet from the Barrow fan responding to the City Vent post saying he'd signed for them? If the latter, I'd take that with a very lage pinch of salt.

He would be a good signing for Barrow.

I saw someone say Harrogate online but I'm 99.9% sure it was a guess. Barrow would mean a move surely? I know they training in Manchester these days to try an appease players who live in northern cities but even still, must be a two/two and half hour trek from Durham way out.

Looking at the agency he uses, a lot of the players, by a lot it must be about 80/85% of them either came up through an academy in the north east or made their starts in the north east. So I wouldn't be surprised if they pitch players to your Barrow/Carlisle types often, just because there's sod all else for miles.

I don’t think the club “accepted a transfer” - GA is on record of saying they are honest with players. I suspect all that happened is that the club let Gilly know of the interest and he just said No. I don’t think there will be anything more to it than that.

Maybe "willing to let him leave" is a better way of putting it.
