I’m not convinced we had a solid plan, an identity or a vision of a playing style in 1999, more as you say that GR / Rhodes were able to throw money at relatively unknown players and it came good.
Who did we have in the scouting system at that time or was it Jewell himself that identified the players he wanted.
Lee Mills, Darren Moore, Gareth Whaley, Dean Windass and Isiah Rankin cost a combined 4 million quid and I’m not certain PJ knew exactly what he was doing or that it was a solid plan that those players would ‘just work’
We also had big wages on McCall, Beagrie, Lawrence and Sharpe during that season.
Robbie Blake was an unearthed diamond and again I’m not sure bringing him in from Darlington the season before was all part of a solid plan.
I summarize by saying that promotion to the PL was achieved by a combination of throwing money at a weak division and the fact everything just clicked that season which I feel very lucky to have witnessed.
Any football club can throw silly money into the playing squad and in the majority of cases it’ll end with success without necessarily having that elusive ‘solid plan’

Of course there are gaps if they are pulled wide to cover for attacking fullbacks who are not wingbacks and offensive wingers who arnt defenders.

What else do we expect with L2 players unless we want 5 across the back and the two wing backs who aren’t allowed to go beyond the halfway line . We cannot have it both ways , unless we sacrifice the odd goal in exchange for scoring more goals than the opponent. It’s a balanced pay off.

Richmond gambled and invested because he thought the cash cow in digital TV was running across the field towards VP. The problem was the gamble failed . If gambling with future income is a plan , then of course he had a “plan” .

So we agree that they sat down before the season and talked about a plan. Then you say that in that particular season absolutely everything went to plan but you refuse to believe there was an actual plan?

Sorry but I'm really struggling to understand.

Big Geoff told us he'd have us in the prem in 5 years and did it without a plan. Well thats me convinced...

Big Geoff definitely had a plan, one he bought off Viv Nicholson!

No big Geoff was identified in the The Beautiful Game? as having a cunning plan. “The march to glory had been done on tick. Everything was rented: the floodlights, furniture, kitchen fittings, CCTV, the shop tills, everything.” There were 26 different lease agreements in place – which even included the paint on the walls of the Main Stand. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/704438.The_Beautiful_Game_Searching_for_the_Soul_of_Football
Yep it was a responsible plan….built on sand.

    Your question:

There is no question without the ages you specifically quote in your question......

So it's not plain English then.....

    https://www.plainenglish.co.uk/

It is deliberately ambiguous and misleading....

Didn't realise his form had tailed off, just remember he seemed to be gettign a few at the start of the season. That said, Sharp could have been dead 5 years and I wouldn't bet against him scoring if he was dug up to play against us

If the solid plan was to spend money then yes there was a plan but I just can’t visualise Paul Jewell, a rookie manager sitting down with a cigarette lighter salesman and shuffling pictures of players around a table planning who to recruit.

If you're going to dumb it down to a situation like that then I'm not surprised you can't believe the club made a plan.

Precisely what I have been saying for years….Many are now catching up to what “spin” actually is and how words are misunderstood because it somehow feeds fans perceptions of WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR. .Fans cannot say they weren’t warned …..

I repeated the key words yesterday often used by football owners all over the planet and the key words most misunderstood by supporters …..”Competetive” add another word . “ Footballing”.

Neither used on their own tell a lie , used in conjunction , they are wide open to interpretation and misunderstanding. That’s where fans go wrong!

A few seconds to find this sums it up.

What does spin mean in business?

It is based on the idea that successful sales ( Selling a story) require a deep understanding of the customer's needs ( What fans want to hear) , as well as effective communication…… The acronym “SPIN” stands for Situation, Problem, Implication, and Need-Payoff, which represent the four stages of a sales .

Get rid of Cook, no way.
I understand his importance to the team and not just his goals. his defending at opposition set pieces is invaluable, just like James Hanson was, another underrated player in my eyes. Would Wells have scored so many without Hanson's workload.
Just wishing we could find that back up, who could understudy, chip in with more than a handful of goals and be primed to step in when Cook does move on.
As i said planning and Bradford City ! as rare as hens teeth.

I do not believe for one minute Cook would not give 100% , he thrives on goals
I also do not believe he is clever enough to employ such a strategy.
He is just a good old fashioned centre forward, who we are lucky to have.

That’s how we were trained. But no not on sales but dealing with the public a lot at corporate events.

Never a truer word spoken….” An old fashioned c/f” . Back in the day, Tony Leighton, Paul Aimson, Bobby and of course Mills. There are many more!
