Football by its very nature is a loss making business bar the teams lucky enough to get to the hallowed ground of the premiership. And a lot of teams trying to get to the premiership are losing money hand over fist. I think with a small level of investment you could easily take a team from non league to mid table league 1, someone like Salford City if they get some investment from their owners. But the jump to the championship gets bigger every year. The best chance of getting there is via a money man bankrolling your dream. We have got as close to the championship without actually getting there, i think we are going to have to accept that there are teams and owners who will be more desperate to get to the championship than we will be over the next few seasons as our aim seems to be young player development over riding everything else.

 

I'd sell Charlie Wyke, buy a time machine with the proceeds and cancel my 1st meeting with Rhodes and Lawn

Well first off I’d accept it won’t happen in the short term. You have to invest a bit, have a few years of losing money and hope the investment gets us to a stable championship club.

From there you either hope we have enough of a fan base and infrastructure to sustain ourselves and then either find a buyer who wants to invest and take us further (thereby getting a return on your investment) or hope we get promoted on a lucky season (like Huddersfield).

More than likely though, we will remain a L1 or struggling championship team for many years and they’ll never get their money back, let alone make a profit.
