Apparently changing it so it doesn’t just appeal to City fans. Thought the City Gent was crap. Rubbish beer and attracted too many hooligan wannabes.

 

Hopefully they have given it a good clean

 

I have a Yorkshire Penny Bank book with £4.37 on it. Can I spend it on beer?

Can't be sure mate but i don't think it was. I remember Nawaabs, there was a nightclub down the left hand side i think it was called Viceroys.

 

They are in the middle of refurbing the old Ital to open as a Nawaab's. They are also refurbing the one opposite the Old Penny Bank to reopen under a different name

 

Bradford brewery closed last Saturday night too.

The position of the bar puts me off going in. 3 deep all the time and an age to get served.

 

Formation all wrong here, need staff on the wings of the bar, not in the middle sitting deep, that will allow 2 punters up top

Sadly, with its unique heritage and amazing decor, it’s destined to be a Wetherspoons.

I went there on a Thursday afternoon last year. Only bloke in there was this chap. He was drunk a bit, and started accusing me of not being a Bradfordian. I may have lost my accent, but not my passport. When I showed him that, it shut him up. The barmaid asked me if I’d like to join her for a drink somewhere else later in the evening.

Timmy Taylor’s on cask, but wasn’t the best. Especially with the well kept ales at the Record Cafe and Sparrow are just next door.

Hope it does well. A lot of history and a lot of space. Perfect for matchdays, but as mentioned, it’s what they do with it mid week that will keep it open.

Hope to visit later in the year.

I loved the old Penny Bank / City Gent. Good priced beer, decent staff, nice little smoking area outside, good vibe on a matchday, and a great location for a pre/post match pint.

Looking forward to visiting again on a Saturday afternoon in the near future.

 

Far too small to be a Wetherspoons

 

I dunno, I've been in some small ones over the years. They don't all have to be big - just big enough to accommodate over sixty year old Irish gentlemen

The older ones yes, but they seem to focus on larger ones now as it easier to make a return
