So it begins, Wigan first club to go into Admin during the Covid19 crisis. I wonder how many other ones are on the brink?

Yeah, just posted in general football.

Sad news for the club and fans. Hope someone comes to their rescue.

This seems to have come out of the blue?. Not heard any hints of this in the media prior to today's announcement

Not sure what happens with points deduction? Will put them bottom if it’s 12 points. Maybe they think they can get enough points to survive still?

Wigan's setup has always been a throw money at it setup. High Wages, buy your way out of the league on crowds that don't even hit 5 figures unless a team brings a decent away support.

    It's the Bolton model.

shocking as they had new owners just recently, I bet because of Covid they wont get a points deduction. Other clubs will follow suit though.

The date passed some months ago for a points deduction to apply this season. I wonder how the EFL will cope if there are several clubs in Administration due to Covid 19? I don't see why it should change things.

i am not clued up on administration but can clubs go into admin to avoid paying debts they owe in full? So the new owners who have only been in charge for a month can start with a “clean slate?”

Any company in administartion can potentially avoid paying their debts. How much they avoid is a matter for the administrator to deal with. As an example, City went into a second administration with around £14mill in debts. Most of that was written off with unsecured creditors receiving just 1p in the pound.

Having a points deduction for the club is one thing. But I'd extend the penalty to directors/owners on a personal basis and have them fail the Owners & Directors test which would disqualify them in the future. That might bring some sanity to football finances. It's a three strikes and you're out rule at the moment and I'd tighten that to one strike and you're out.

    Thanks makes sense.
Seems the EFL will determine a points deduction based on where they finish this season

The EFL have made a statement saying that if Wigan finish in the bottom 3 this season the 12 points deduction will apply next season.

If Wigan don't finish in the bottom 3 this season then 12 points will be deducted this season.

Not quite. It's a 12point deduction irrspective of where Wigan finish this season, probably in the Championship. And it will be applied next season wherever they are, proibably still in the Championship. To be clear, if the admin event was before the 4th Thursday in March the point deduction applies this year; if it is after that date, it applies next season. And I doubt they've been keeping this secret for over 3 months!

That is unless the EFL bring in another rule to deal with the Covid 19 situation if there are many other clubs in the same position. Why the EFL should do so defeats me.

Where have the EFL said that since it runs counter to their own very specific rules on this?

Edit - A friend has just forwarded the EFL statement to me and their statement is as you say.

Wigan are 8 points clear ahead of tonights game. So have a change.

Hearing it might not be an automatic 12 points deduction. It could be 8-12 points but more than likely it will be 12 points.

Covid 19 has played a very small part in this although it will be used by reporters who haven't bothered to do any meaningful research.

The Whelan family were regularly putting in between £800K and £1.2 million PER MONTH to keep the club afloat. That disappeared on the first sale, and the second sale was only a month or so ago.

The knock-on effect is with the Rugby League club - will the RL buy the ground, like they purchased the lease on Odsal??

When did Wigan last get a decent fee from a locally produced player??

Just the same as their near neighbours in Bolton - living way beyond their means. Benefactor stops the cash injections and the sh*t hits the fan.

I think Wigan will be more than 'just annoyed'. I suspect they'll be really, really annoyed! ;)
