    The Sporting Heritage of Bradford

Talk at Bradford Local Studies Library: 19 May, 2018

During the second half of the nineteenth century Bradford established a proud reputation as a leading centre of sport and was known for the enthusiasm and prowess of its sports clubs.

However, after the end of World War One, Bradford became increasingly associated with sporting failure and ultimately, in 1985 with tragedy. The proud heritage of the nineteenth century tended to be overlooked and forgotten.

The origins and early development of sport in Bradford has hitherto been neglected by local historians.

In 2016 John Dewhirst published two books, ROOM AT THE TOP and LIFE AT THE TOP that narrate the history of Bradford sport from its beginnings through to becoming commercialised in the final quarter of the nineteenth century. His books explain how Bradford became a rugby centre and of how the intense rivalry of Manningham FC and Bradford FC dominated sporting passions, later extended into soccer through Bradford City AFC and Bradford Park Avenue AFC. He also offers an alternative explanation for the breakaway Northern Union in 1895.

On Saturday 19th May he will be talking about his research findings and answering questions from people interested in Bradford’s sporting heritage at the Local Studies Library, Bradford 10:30am – 12pm.

And I thought "Room at the Top" and "Life at the Top" were two novels by Bingley's finest (possibly only) printed wordsmith John Brain.

People called John Brain were a cricketer and another was a rugby player, John Braine is the novelist ;)

    Does this assist?

John Braine was born in the Westgate area of central Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire. The family later moved to the suburb of Thackley on the northern edge of the city. Braine left St. Bede's Grammar School at 16 and worked in a shop, a laboratory and a factory before becoming, after the war, a librarian in Bingley, a small town five miles up the Aire Valley . https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Braine

The book titles were chosen as a tribute to the said John Braine. ROOM AT THE TOP tells the story of the origins of sport in Bradford and of how Manningham FC aspired to challenging Bradford FC as a leading club, ie to get room at the top. LIFE AT THE TOP continues the story and tells the story of the rivalry of the Manningham and Bradford clubs as leading rugby sides enjoying their life at the top. Braine wrote about Yorkshire folk, their ambition and jealousies and it seemed fitting for the story of the Valley Parade and Park Avenue clubs!

My talk on 19 May is about the origins of Bradford sport and how it came to shape the local identity of Bradford people.

Ha ha I know who John Braine is Rod. Room at the top and life at the top are too of my favourite books. Play on words that I’d expect a wordsmith like you to understand
