I agree. You have to wonder what the current fitness coach offers right now? I would say poor value unless he is being completely ignored by SM and KB? Which seems really doubtful.

who is the current fitness coach? Is it a SM appointment? Or does it predate him?

So did Rhodes, and look where that got us. Sold out to two complete novices, one with zero interest in the game and other who was a meglomaniacal frustrated football manager.

As for McCall. You've got to wonder if he hasn't gone already and they were even daft enough to extend his contract. Then we're relying on him walking because they won't pull the trigger themselves. Which worries me, because if they do sign some players, the injury list clears a bit and they're giving him time because of these factors. But ultimately the results don't improve enough to quash relegation fears. Then by the time he does walk away, it could be too late for anyone coming in to save the club by the time that the trap door opens.

    Agreed.

He has let a few things slip out in interviews, which I thought was interesting. First about giving him 18 months to turn it around (before he had his deal extended) and also about not spending the full cap. He said words to that effect but stopped himself, anyway.

I think fans would have been more understanding if he/the club said from the outset we were worried what impact Covid would have this year and didn’t want to over commit resources in the summer when we were unsure how revenue streams would be affected. But saying that wouldn’t shift STs or appease fans after Vaughan was allowed to leave.

Stuart hasn’t helped himself though by saying he had completed his jigsaw and by talking up players like Guthrie etc - when they clearly just aren’t good enough and many fans thought that in the summer.

After the Carlisle loss, when Jamie Raynor quizzed him on WYS Daily, Stuart did admit there isn’t enough in this squad now and we would be recruiting in January.

I think that is the first time I’ve heard him say that - up to now I think he’s always collectively defended them.

He perhaps can’t help but let the frustrations slip out now we’re in the relegation zone.

I think he is going to get until February now isn’t he. The ink is barely dry on his new contract (and his CEO’s) and he probably can cite injuries (rightly or wrongly.....i think most of them won’t improve us anyway) to Ryan now to get him through Xmas.

With Sparks getting him help with recruitment so he can do what he does best - coach - i think they are highly unlikely to fire him before those new players have been recruited and had a chance to make a short term impact either.

We need Clarke and Novak to stay fit, for sure, but its all getting too close for comfort.

Grimsby were apparently awful last night. Harrogate’s wheels are falling off. But Christ, what a sorry mess. Cheltenham are supposedly one of the best sides in this division. I’ve been impressed by anyone tbh. It’s a disgraceful division.

I think Sparks is more likely than Rhodes to have the balls to sack McCall before the end of January if he needs to. He will know what’s at stake.

Let’s not make excuses he’s just not very good as a football manager

    He’s doing badly this time.

That said, people are too quick to dismiss his past records here in his second spell and at Motherwell. He isn’t completely useless but he needs some quality to work with.

Im not sure he is very good at identifying it but he has been a very good coach in the past

Good point on the warm up. Wouldn’t it be great if Jamie Lawrence came in. Would give the fans a huge lift and if he got an extra 10 % out of the lads / reduced niggly injuries, it’d be well worth it

He's good for a short while if he takes over a team built by another - better - manager. He can keep the ball rolling and build on that momentum but eventually it does go backwards.

If that isn't the situation he takes over its regression all the way.

Even his best achievements are often overstated and over played. That doesn't mean they aren't worthy of some credit by themselves but context is often ignored.

In terms of when his time at City is/was up. In my view it was 2010, but we've give him two more goes since then. Who knows when the penny will drop this time, I hope its before we do.

As a coach, he is perfect. Work the routines that the manager dictates, be the players mate, be the buffer between them and the manager, a bit like Steve Parkin was. I would love to see him stay as first team coach to a "proper football manager" but it's not going to happen.

I do like his style football but he doesn't seem to be very good at identifying the players needed to play that style, and when it goes wrong can't handle the criticism, although a lot of managers are like that.
He took on Parkinson's squad and with a few additions got them playing some very good football. Yes a lot of draws that season but most of those we should have won. Only really Charlton and I think the other was Rochdale, both away, when I felt we lucky to get a draw. Very bad recruitment for this season.

Ben Rome who like sparks is ex-bulls and not a SM pick. I guess they were both cheap and keen.
Fully expecting woolly bully to be brought on board.
City need to be doing better than than this but what do we fans know eh?

Read the article that has this at the bottom
Meanwhile, physios Chris Royston, Dayle Avison and Jack Lindsey and recruitment analyst Robbie Bloodworth have all been handed new contracts by the club.

He came in under Abbott and is the first team performance analyst now. But for either role he had it was likely just spreadsheet guy. That said, the most forward thinking back room position we recruited in recent times

First Watt in the T&A and now this. Deluded fools need to wake up and realise they are part of probably the worst squad in the history of the club and will find themselves playing non league football next season if there isn't fundamental structural changes including the manager they class as a mate not a boss
