Good time to be England fan. We have a really exciting crop coming through who are playing regular for their club and hopefully will make us competitive for years to come. Only negative for me is Southgate, negative tactics and comes up short against the better nations. I think he will be our downfall but I will get behind him and the boys regardless.

Who makes your 26 man squad???? This isn't a prediction but who I would take.

    Goalkeepers
    • Jordan Pickford
    • Dean Henderson
    • Nick Pope
These three pick themselves. Pickford has improved, not as many high profile errors recently and good to see Henderson as pretty much the Man Utd number 1 right now. Pope is a safe pair of hands and a very capable 3rd choice. Stand by choice is Sam Johnstone at West Brom.

    Defenders
    • Harry Maguire
    • John Stones
    • Conor Coady
    • Ben Godfrey
    • Kyle Walker
    • Kieran Trippier
    • Trent Alexander-Arnold
    • Luke Shaw
    • Ben Chillwell
Plenty of obvious ones who are mainstays. Coady goes because of his ability to play in a trio if we play three at the back. Walker another alternative for that role hence the three right backs. Trent is improving, a lot made of his defensive qualities but if we play with wing backs he is your man. Shaw has been the best LB in the PL this season so starts for me. I like Godfrey at Everton, really come into his own and can operate at CB or LB so we have cover there if needed. He is in because Joe Gomez won't make it. Stand by would be average but safe Michael Keane at Everton.

    Midfielders
    • Declan Rice
    • Kalvin Phillips
    • Jordan Henderson
    • Jude Bellingham
    • Mason Mount
    • Phil Foden
    • Jesse Lingard
Phillips is a shoe in as him and Rice are the only capable holding midfielders we have. Bellingham is a kid, playing for Dortmund and impressed with what I seen. I think he goes this summer anyway as Southgate called him up for easy qualifiers rather than letting Boothroyd take him to Under 21 Euros. Lingard has impressed me, hit a real purple patch so cant be ignored (Monkey man, I got it wrong!). if Henderson doesn't make it then James Ward Prowse is my standby choice and comes in.

    Forwards

    • Harry Kane
    • Dominic Calvert-Lewin
    • Mason Greenwood
    • Raheem Sterling
    • Marcus Rashford
    • Jadon Sancho
    • Jack Grealish
Greenwood has hit form at just the right time and benefits from the 26 man squad. Him and Rashford means you only need to take two recognised out and out strikers as Kane will be on the pitch 99% of the time. Options there to cover injury. I really hope Gareth doesn't do something stupid and leaves Grealish out. Had an injury and murmurings Southgate still unsure but hopefully just paper talk. He starts on the left for me. Ollie Watkins on standby.

Lots of good shouts in there. Agree with the 3 keepers - there aren’t really many other viable alternatives.

Defensively, I’d take Ben White over Coady. I think he’d be well suited to international football and can cover 2-3 positions. Centre Half is a worry for me - I think it’s where we’re weakest. An injury to Maguire would be a real problem. I’d be tempted to look at Reece James over Tripper too, but we lack experience at the back, so Tripper probably gets the nod on that basis.

Midfield - the dilemma for me is whether to take Lingard. I don’t really rate him, but he’s been in brilliant form and that counts for a lot going into a tournament. I’d worry about Henderson - hasn’t he been missing for a while? Will he be up to speed and fit? Same question for Grealish. Unless Grealish gets a couple of league games in, I think he misses out and Lingard then definitely goes. It’s one or the other, and I’d do that in order to be able to take another central striker. And for that role I’d look at either Bamford or Ings.

I dont think Grealish goes as a MF but more as a FW. Hes playing LW and thats where Southgate sees him. Squad is 26 for this tournament so should be selected fitness aside. Can fit Jesse in there too.

Ings is a good shout. Forgot about him.

Another name into the mix is Saka. But I don't think he gets in ahead of Shaw or Chilwell.

Yes I like him, playing LW/RW now. Id have considered James Justin at LB.

Personally, I would take AWB but that won't happen. Every single one of the RB's England has is a little suspect defensively and I feel there are situations and some teams that without being able to call on a good defender in that position leaves us open. AWB is awful if you want to create stuff from the FB (although he has got a bit better) but you can rely on him on the defensive side and lets say we are defending a narrow lead in a Semi-final being able to take out say TAA who is a defensive liability and just shut up shop would be useful

I dont think he is necessary now. Ings, Watkins, Abraham will all be on the fringes. Theyve been available through qualifying and available after. Vardy hasnt had the best of seasons.

Its a good shout. TAA, Tripper, Walker are all slightly suspect defensively. Suppose we're playing a Belgium and the right back needs to defend against Hazard, or France and Mbappe. You want AWB in that role and then you're challenging your forward players to go and win the game.

    Reece James doesn't make it?
Not his fault his crosses are too fast for any bugger to latch onto.
Southgate may decide to revert to a back 3 for the big games, where James/Trent and Chilwell can do their stuff.

Maddison not good enough for the squad?
Shame Harvey Barnes got injured, he was looking useful.
Love to see Bellingham selected and playing alongside the likes Mount and the Stockport Messi.

Up front, Kane Rashford and Foden select themselves and i prefer the hustle of Ings over the physical Lewin and now is the moment for Bradford's own Greenwood to shine.

By 'eck England have some talent this time.
So dont go all shy Gareth.

Reece James and James Maddison simply a victim of better players in their position. Walker and Trippier wont be around for much longer so James can step up then. If Lingard didnt have his purple patch I would consider Maddison although he is a bit of a kangaroo.

Agree, great defender but useless going forward. Modern fullback requires more at this level. I think its time England killed off games rather than tried to defend leads though. That WC semi final was there for the taking.

    Jordan Pickford
    Nick Pope
    Dean Henderson

    Kyle Walker
    Reece James
    Kieran Tripper

    Luke Shaw
    Ben Chilwell

    Harry Maguire
    John Stones
    Conor Coady
    Michael Keane
    Tyrone Mings

    Declan Rice
    Jude Bellingham
    Kalvin Phillips
    James Ward-Prowse

    Phil Foden
    Mason Mount
    Jack Grealish
    Raheem Sterling
    Jadon Sancho
    Marcus Rashford

    Harry Kane
    Danny Ings
    Dom Calvert-Lewin
    Mason Greenwood

My main 11 would be Pickford - Walker Stones Maguire Shaw - Rice - Mount Foden - Sancho Kane Rashford

For the bigger, or more difficult, games maybe bring Bellingham in for Rashford and have two sitters with Foden going wide left.

Prediction - France to win it. England out in the Semi's.

Oops. Bin JWP then. I also saw a tweet saying Tomori is keeping Milan's captain out of the team, the fans love him and they're going to make the signing permanent in an expensive transfer this summer. A classic case of out of sight out of mind and unfortunately I can see Southgate picking Mings or Dier ahead of him. : unamused:: unamused:: unamused:

I don't understand why he's named a 33 man squad today. 7 extra players that he now has to cut.

I think it's because so many players are still involved in European finals for Man U, Man City and Chelski. He's hedging his bets in case there are injuries and using the warm up matches to see if any fringe picks, like Lingard or TAA impress enough to get into the final squad.

I think despite some worries defensively I think we have enough talent to be in with a real chance this summer and the World Cup following
