We don’t encourage the players?? 99% of city fans want and do support the team. I expect us to push for promotion out of this awful league, if that is expecting too much then I give up, what is the point!

Who said we would be throwing our tallest player or best header of a ball on the half way line? Clearly our attacking player would also be one who's unlikely to win any initial header.

However you structure it, with a keeper, one extra defender and the corner taker, the defending team has the option of 3 extra bodies defending the set piece.

If we leave one up it still means we have 10 players in and around our box whereas they will only have 7 (minus the keeper, 2 defenders and the taker), which obviously is still the 3 extra players.

Are we really suggesting that it's impossible to properly defend a set piece and cover all bases with an extra 3 bodies compared to the opposition?

Sorry but I'm not having it.

It's only abhorrent if it's not done properly.

I think we can safely assume that we're not doing it properly.

    Zonal marking does not work.
If you are standing [static] in your given 'zone' and two opposition players run into that 'zone'at speed then you are fecked, because no defender can go with them as they have to stay in there own allotted 'zone'.

Simplistic view at best and as mentioned earlier you haven't the players to play it and certainly they've not been coached or trained hard enough on it.

That’s down to the players not being coached how to implement it correctly though.

If it was that easy to get round,no team would use zonal marking.

The failure of different systems in football are either down to not having the players to do it or not being coached correctly.

I think most teams use a hybrid format these days where they'll have maybe 4 zonal defenders and the others man marking.

That's how it looks to me when you watch PL games anyway.

Some absolutely fantastic answers in this thread.
Can't really add a great deal more but what it does show is the fan base care and are certainly alive and kicking.

    Genuine question:

To what extent do you guys think our failure is based on trying to play a 'Premier League' style?

I'm not sure "Premier League style is any different to what other past failed mangers have tried to play if your players aren't good enough to execute that type of football, the big thing in football at the moment certainly at the top clubs is to play it out from the back not giving the ball away to cheaply, yet we see these very same teams mess up time and time again, they are 4th division footballers for a reason and I'm not sure Hughes takes that onboard even though he has daily contact at training.
I known some called Phil Parkinsons football dark age football but like it or not take Paul Jewells time at the club away and its been the only period where we have had sustained progress, you see the odd team getting out of this league by playing football but the majority get the ball from "A" to "B" into the oppositions penalty area as quickly as possible and if for nothing else we see goalmouth excitement, I'm not suggesting it works at every level you hope the higher you go in the football pyramid the more competent players you get who can get the ball down and play on the grass.

I've expressed that view on a number of occasions and genuinely believe it. The underlying concern for me remains Hughes' failure to grasp the nature of lower league football. It's different to PL and increasingly to the Championship. That's taking nothing away from Hughes enormous experience as a player or respected manager. It's just different. Emulating PL footie with its emphasis on building from the back and keeping possession whilst waiting for the opening might well work with typical, more talented and pacier players in the PL but it doesn't transfer easily to the khazi league. I've described PL footie as akin to chess with a patient buildup and waiting for the opening. Our type of footie is more akin to snakes and ladders with the random nature of the dice thrown in for good measure!

If having a player out is such a benefit then why do very few teams do it including some of the most attacking managers in the world? It's an old fashioned thought that makes it look like you are doing something when you aren't.

    Disagree on that one Birky.

Take Saturday for example. The Walsall goalkeeper was virtually on the halfway line when we had a corner and all bar one of their players were camped in and around our box. Even if we won the ball from the initial corner there was only one place where it was coming back to within 10 seconds, with no pressure applied to the ball!! Our set up allowed that. If we had left at least one man out then 2 of their players would not have been on the edge of our box and their keeper certainly wouldn't have been on the halfway line!! We just invite the pressure straight back upon ourselves!!

You're not the first to suggest this USG, but what evidence has anybody got that Macdonald has got even the slightest clue how to manage a team.
