What is it with City fans wanting to play players out of position? He's been our best player, playing in his best position on the left wing. Leave him there.

I read in the T&A today that Adams wants Vernam to be more clinical and expects more goals from him, which is fair enough.

No mention of Gillead's output though. Compared to Vernam's 2 goals and 3 assists so far, Gillead has drawn a blank in both goals and I believe assists.

A bit unfair to call out just Vernam publicly in my opinion

He did say though that he wanted others in the squad to raise their hands to match Vernam. For me he was giving him praise but keeping him grounded and wanted more.

Jordan, could not agree more! Always playing too far off the wing, squeezing space between him and Cooke and making it more difficult for Callum to find the space he does so well when someone else isn't treading on his footsteps. And that leaves the wing badly served by Gillead. No goals, no assists this season. Look at his career record - few goals, not many assists. Crankshaw for me - he automatically gives Callum Cooke the space to play in and works out far wider.

In total agreement Northern Monkey. Vernam has real potential. Currently, he's infuriatingly in and out. But he's clearly got a huge amount of talent. It's up to Adams to help him find more consistency. If the two of them can work well together, Vernam could become a spectacular player for us. He has skill, speed and ability - he needs to add game decision-making and better positional play to his palette.

Any professional footballer worth his salt should already have the 'knack' of putting the ball in the net...yes/no..?

I think it's easy to forget that he's only 24 and only played around 100 senior games. He's done well so far this season and looks far and away our most dangerous asset.

I feel like he will improve over time and hopefully it'll be with us.

Vernam gets tons of chances which shows it's working where he is I think you moved him more centrally all those chances would disappear as he's a head up and take someone on before shooting kind of winger which is exactly what we need on BOTH wings

If he could hit the target regularly he'd bag 15-20 this season but we're probably looking at 5-10 from him as things stand

Still this is League Two where sometimes it just clicks for some players who haven't proven themselves and who knows if he hits top form he could score quite a few - but only from the wing

Yep, you weren't the only one to notice this- Threkeld is often out wide as a wing back on his lonesome.
Plus Law used to cop plenty of flack from the crowd when tucked in on the left.
But City had Meredith at left back, very handy.

Exactly this. More questions for Gilliead never actually being on the right wing all season, he seems to be playing 15 yards inside, taking up a lot of space Cooke would want to operate in, leaving whichever RB we've had in the games with a lot to do going forward. Vernam and Ridehalgh seem to have a good link at the moment on the left hand side, wouldn't be changing that..

Also, Vernam missed a few easier chances in the box this season, especially Saturday, seem to remember two or three efforts in the box from a good position, and he didn't even hit the target. Probably the hardest chance he had all Saturday, he scored.

I saw that more as he knows Vernam can do more and is in a good place in terms of confidence to be publicly demanding more from him? looks like Gillead is either woeful or way out of form so demanding more from him in the press wouldn’t be beneficial.
I am sure he’s got him to one side in training at the minute working on it? Or I’d hope

Think Adam’s might be putting pressure on the wrong person, 21 career goals in 5 years suggests if he wants a good finisher it is not Vernam.

Time to admit the formation at home sucks Adam’s.

Vernam has been, to be fair , far and away the best of the wide men. He gets in more dangerous positions, is a huge threat to the oppo, usually taking two men to mark him, and in old fashioned terms a right pain in the arse to the opposition.

For me he poses the largest goalscoring threat of the entire team so far. ( Cook is too predictable and easily marked out of the game playing on his own and Gilly….meh so far)

As I said the other day , if he could only finish, he would be a valuable asset.

I believe that’s what Adams is inferring….his finishing needs to improve, his approach play is difficult to fault.

Yeah. There will be higher offers from other clubs but we will ignore them because Town is the only place Chas wants to go.

I assume we don’t have a forwards coach?
This would seem to be a good opportunity to spend some of the Turnbull money and get a quality coach in a couple of times a week to work on finishing-we’re creating chances-need to get the players into the knack of finishing them off

    No.

Footballers don't come to clubs as the complete article, they are all coached in an effort to improve them. Even the best will want to spend time developing and learning to become even better and imo that type of mindset is a huge part of why they are "the best".

It looks like Gillead has instructions to tuck in and crowd the central midfield - so we have to ask Adams why? It might be understandable had we a right back who could bomb on.
Its like Law did for Mccall.

Meredith was similar to Ridehalge. He could never avoid hitting the opposing full back with his crosses either.

I'd be outstanded if AG aggregates a total of 6 goals and assists across the season, as I have posted his figures previously.
