We now know Doyle was massively underperforming last season. We know some of the reasons.

Given our current form, who else can be classed as underperforming given their ability?

Vaughan is an obvious one. He is not being given enough chances.

Cooke, for me, looks good whenever he makes an attacking run - which is far too infrequent. He is very difficult to tackle, and wriggles out of tight corners time and time again, before generally offloading to someone without advancing the teams position. I would certainly ask more of Cooke.

Mellor is underperforming for me, though using him as a wing back is ridiculous.

Wood, more recently, also underperforming. Where are the glorious crosses now?

Not sure Oteh is better than his mediocre performances suggest, but is he really given many chances?

They are all underperforming because they are all playing at least 10 to 20 yards too deep.

Getting the ball to Cooke and the two wing backs higher up the pitch would also provide the platform for Vaughan to do his work in the box and would bring out the best in all 4 of them. It really is that simple imo.

Most of them. Bar reeves who has been consistent since he came back o donnell and wood bar last saturday they’ve all left me underwhelmed too often. Bowyer needs to get more out of them. Palmer Anderson and Akpan offer so little from what I’ve seen.

Palmer was the pick of the 3 defensive centre mids for me today.
Kept the ball moving and got stuck in.

The game passed him by, in the main. His set pieces were atrocious. No attacking threat. No driving forward through central midfield.
For me hadn’t done anywhere near enough to warrant staying beyond January at present. Needs to influence games more.

Illness denied BowyerS some key players yesterday, i think Reeves would have had a field day against a poor side on a very good expansive pitch. That said he's only as good as the options around him, problem is he's a level or two above all of them even after 20 months out. Both Palmer and Cooke had chance to impress with Reeves out and both failed miserably although the set up doesn't help them at all. When your creativity has to come through 2 league 2 full backs you know the ninety minutes is gonna feel like nine hundred. heck i even heard someone argue at the game yesterday that because Sheffield Utd play with 'overlapping' centre backs then its alright for us. Honestly some of the bullshit from fans masquerading as opinion is laughable.
Fact is, take out the likes of Reeves and Donaldson and this is a very average league 2 side. There's nothing special about it, nothing to warrant the claims of going up automatically. People mistakenly have run the phrase for a while now about BowyerS 'taking the shackles off'. Well from what i've seen this season so far there are no 'shackles' to take off. More the fact we just ain't that good.

I think it’s hard to question who is underachieving when so many are being played in the wrong position or being asked to play a certain style. A perfect example would be Connolly, awful last few games but the lad is a genuine out and out winger who was terrorising defences out wide less than 2 months ago CW another obvious example

A hard one to answer imo

Connolly is the best of a poor bunch imo. Wasted playing the role alongside Oteh, goodness knows why McCarten isn't given a chance. Still very average league 2 though, just quick and nothing else.

Palmer was the best and got stuck in?? If you went yesterday then I honestly don’t think you saw what the other 1500+ of us saw. Palmer was awful. Soft, shirked challenges, set pieces wasted. Easily the weakest of them

For me the corners were in the right areas. Paudies header first half should have scored, created Paudies wonder miss with an intelligent loft back in. We just have really poor attackers of the ball. BRE should be towering above opposition players and getting flick ons or headers at goal because of his size. He has 1 goal

I would send Palmer back if possible. He's been average at best for us.

Can’t fairly judge the players on current form, given Bowyer playing this daft formation that clearly isn’t working and no way suits the players we have on the books.

The whole of the Midfield have underachieved as a group, for me. It's OK lambasting the likes of Connolly, Wood and Ismail for no or little end product ........... But when those teasing crosses go in to just two C&A shirts against 7 or 8 defenders - What chance have our two shirts got, as OUR MF is busy gripping the halfway line for fear of a counter attack (which STILL breaks through, ha ha ha) ?
SO ........ The biggest under performer ? It has to be Bowyer and his tactics.

I'd keep Palmer, Reeves and Cooke. Not too arsed about Taylor but hes better than the others on that list.

When we look at under performers, it's a collective thing. Because for me, it's the system that inhibits any sort of creativity. It's not about formations, it's about intent and coaching. I dont know what we do in training but there doesnt look to be any evidence of building attacking patterns of play, whatsoever. The squad isn't a bad one. Assume Doyle goes, I'd send back Oteh too and then focus on bringing in 1, maybe 2 strikers, and either a quality Wide man or a creative, attacking midfielder. 2-3 out and the same in, could make a huge difference if we go after real quality. But if the players are sent out with the handbrake on, what's the point? If they're not coached to be a creative, attacking side then whoever we sign, there wont be many more goals brought into the team

James Vaughan is every bit as capable as Eoin Doyle. Probably more so. He'd have done just as well for Swindon as Doyle has.

Spot on. We can't judge the abilities of the players we have because so many of them are playing in unfamiliar roles. And, in addition, they're playing in a side that at the moment has one fit striker and no discernible pattern of play. It's hardly a surprise that they're not performing to their best.

Surely it's a complete revamp of the coaching setup that's needed and an experienced assistant for Bowyer.
