Match of the Day: Alan Shearer and Micah Richards 'flabbergasted' by Fabian Balbuena's red - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/56875984

This has to be one of the worst refereeing decisions I've ever seen.
How can you play as a defender if you can't make a routine clearance off the deck without worrying whether you might accidentally catch someone afterwards?
Did Balbuena endanger an opponent? He was first to the ball by a long way. You could argue that Chilwell should have pulled out of a challenge that he was never going to win and by continuing he put himself in danger.
    It's just madness.
I really hope West Ham appeal this. Not just for the club and Balbuena's sake but to try to put down a marker to stop this absolutely fecking nonsense. There has to be an acceptance that if you play football you're going to get hurt sometimes and that doesn't necessarily mean it's anyone's fault - it's part of the game and if you take out the physicality it just becomes sterile.

How people watching on VAR and then the Match ref could come to the conclusion that was a red card is beyond comprehension

    I know. It's utterly absurd.
David Moyes said that decision could only have been made by someone who's never played the game. I don't know what level of football the ref has ever played at but even at school games lessons level you must know that accidental injuries will always happen. I used to play centre back in a Sunday League team. I wouldn't have lasted a full game with the application of these laws. I just don't know how, as a defender, you are supposed to second guess where your opponent is going to end up being positioned in relation to your kicking foot every time you go in for a clearance. It's madness.

The powers that be are killing the game we love, Graeme Souness made a similar comment during a recent game this is why Sky & BT broadcast English football mainly the Premier League if we want to see no physicality in the game watch French football.
Goal line technology is fine but any wonder were getting 7/8 minutes extra time at the end of a game when we were told the decisions will only take seconds it wont be like rugby league, then we see VAR can't make a call and the referee has to go to the screen to make the decision.

How often does a referee overturn the original decision after consulting VAR?

In my opinion, when a ref is 'advised' to go look at the screen it immediately puts doubt in his mind that he got the decision wrong... that's the problem. He thinks the video ref has seen something he hasn't, he goes over to look at it and essentially convinces himself that there's an issue. That's what I believe happened yesterday and is why VAR isn't working in it's current format.

But why did the video ref even draw it to the on field ref's attention? Anyone with the faintest knowledge of football could see from one replay that Balbuena did nothing whatsoever wrong. It was an accidental contact and just part of the game. The VAR ref should have quickly reviewed it, concluded there was nothing to see here and let the game continue uninterrupted without even talking to the man in the middle.
As Lineker said, it wasn't a red because it wasn't even a foul.

To be honest I think VAR is a joke, I was against bringing it it and the more I see of it the more convinced I am. I'm waiting for the day a player is given offside because his bell end is hanging out of his shorts!
Goal line technology yes we needed that but it's becoming a farce now. I wonder if that referee has looked again at the silly decision he has given.

I am a big fan of technology, but I am afraid VAR seems to be a case of using technology because it is there, rather than because it is improving things. In fact, I'd go further and say in this case it is making things worse.

Scrap VAR (in a live game situation) completely, it adds little to the game and takes a lot more away from it. By all means use the technology to review events after a match (to hand out post-match bans, educate referees etc.), but, as things stand at the moment, VAR is not fit for purpose.
