I can't disagree with that. But, if you are really serious about a promotion campaign, and you don't have the quality in the squad, then you are gonna have to speculate to get it. All our last budget got us was players no one else wanted instead of bringing in the quality we so badly need. And that quality unfortunately comes with the caveat of costing more than what average players cost.

It wasn't self sufficient, it needed the mother of all cup runs, two of them, to allow the balancing of the books. That's not being self sufficient, that's relying on a manager to have the arguably the two best cup runs we've ever had (bar winning the cup) and you cannot rely on that.

But Roger wasn't just calling the reaction to individual games hysterical. He criticised fans on here for complaining about our position in the league, for not valuing the positive bank balance, for not believing in the possibility of a playoff push in the second half of the season. He ignored or massively underplayed the slide from the top of L1 under Rupp and the failure to back up the brazen summer promotion promises with the money to get good enough players to achieve that.

The general tenor of his posts was, 'Stop moaning and be grateful for what you've got'. But most supporters are now well beyond grateful. They're heartily pissed off at the years of underachievement, the failure to right wrongs and the absence of controlled risk taking from our wealthy absentee owner. I think it's a shame that Roger has bowed out of this forum, because many of his contributions have been valuable. But to suggest that reasonable criticism of the club is hysterical is just wrong, and taking his bat home because they don't accord with his view is rather childish.

We ran on a year by year basis which meant if one year there was a deficit it had to be made up the following year or accounting period. Which is where a lot of the cup run money went. And during those times there was no pandemic with little money coming in.

Yes but without the cup runs and the extra money the budgets the following year would have been drastically cut

That is not how a self sustaining business works. A self sustainable business works on the premise that everything is paid for from what you earn, not a reliant on a cup run, player sake or budget cut the following season. It is simply run by if we have no cup runs or player sales we will not make any loss, and as Rupp is hands off makes him useless as he also puts no investment into the club. It is chalk and cheese with Lawn and Rhodes, neither are a particularly good strategy long term but that doesn’t make them the same thing.

Which is exactly where we find ourselves now with the budget cut drastically. We ain't gonna have another cup run like under Parky I'd guess in my life time unless we are lucky. And the only other avenue for being self sufficient is to sell young players at a profit. Yet we have none coming through the first team. If Stefan wants to kick start the revolution he's gonna have to dig into his pockets and fund it himself.

Self sustainablity means making ends meet if you overspend you make it up so say we were in a much better position now and needed that push I am sure the boat would have been pushed out. But in the end it’s not spending money you haven’t got or can’t get back leading to debt

Off field income streams such as better catering deals better shop offerings. Better marketing of the club more and better Sponsorship deals is also a way of raising money

Exactly read your final sentence it’s about not spending money you haven’t got, that’s not what we did under Lawn and Rhodes, hence the million pound loan to go for promotion in McCalls second season and hence the deficits in the Parky era which were paid for by cup runs and then layer sales. So I’ll ask again when have we been run like we are being run now in the past 30 years or so? Because they’re nothing alike.

No they didn’t . You can never guarantee how much you will get for a player so they couldn’t plan a budget on it. Just answer the question asked if you, you said we’re being run now as we always have where are these examples? It’s literally nothing alike other than we didn’t spend huge sugar daddy type money that’s the only similarity.

Theres billions of pounds in the prem. The championship needs millions for success. Rupp clearly doesnt want to fund that and as the years go on the gap between those divisions and ours will only get bigger. We had an opportunity to have a group of investors who were willing to match those requirements. You for one have displayed a massive misunderstanding of block chain. So why do you think you are so right about this?

Two weeks ago the model we have now was sufficient. NOT amazing, NOT dreadful but sufficient. Now we know what we could have had the model is now dreadfully insufficient.

The championship model isn't sustainable. I think it'll burst at some point and the clubs who'll do well in the longer term will be those who've invested in academies, smart recruitment and data analytics to buy players at a young age and sell on. Your Brentford's and Peterborough's.

Thankfully we've escaped all that eh?

What you should be doing is looking at what value and new business they are bringing the club. That would be a fairer way to look at it.

Agree. Your commercial and sales staff should be measured on the basis how much they cost as a % of the revenue they bring in.
