Sad photos Bronco. That's where it all started for me, when I was five year old , going with my dad who was a die-hard Stan. Back in 1962, and I'm 65! today Unbelievable Jeff!

Happy Birthday mate, yes they were great times playing your local opposition and going to work Monday morning with bragging rights if your team had won.

Very sad photos, I originated in Great Horton, so saw a few games there in my youth, my uncle had a season ticket, so used to tag along with him from time to time, it was a lovely ground back in the day, and don't forget the cricket pitch behind the main stand, a great sporting complex.

When City were playing a long distance away I'd go to Park Avenue with a pal who supported them.
I remember players such as Jimmy Scoular, Ian Gibson, Jimmy Fryatt , Tommy Spratt and Kevin Hector.
The highlight of matches there was when they played the Czechoslovakia national team for the inauguration of their new floodlights.

I grew up in Low Moor so I suppose Avenue were my local team. Used to get the bus down Manchester Road and get off at the "Towers"? cinema. (Or have I imagined that?) Then follow my mum's directions which were to "follow the crowd". Don't know how old I was at that point, 10 or 11 maybe. Only match that stands out for me was an evening game against Fulham from the old 1st division, so I'm guessing it was League Cup. The thing I remember most was the difference in the two teams running onto the pitch at the start of the game. The Fulham players seemed like giants compared with the Avenue team, men versus boys! No memory of the game itself or the score. Anyone remember when this was?

The Towers is still there just below the "Red Lion" where the City Circle stopped, then walk along Carbottom Road with the tram sheds at the end turn right and your at the top of Canterbury Avenue.

Just been looking it up, apparently it was demolished in 1972 when Manchester Road was widened. I'll have a proper look next time I'm around that way

I always thought this was the Towers, with the Red Lion to its right.

According to http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/38022 , "The cinema was destroyed by a fire on 16th October 1970. The remains were demolished in 1972 when Manchester Road was widened into a dual carriageway" you're correct, , this is the old Towers Hall Cinema.

I recognise the one in your picture and your comment about the city circle makes sense now! Don't know it's name, it's the one at Bankfoot isn't it. The Towers was on the other side of Manchester Road and further down towards town. If I recall correctly it would have been a bit before where the new Lidl is now. Been up and down Manchester Road countless times, you'd think I'd remember:confused:

Yes more or less opposite where the old tram sheds were at the end of Carbottom Road, I think at one time it was a snooker hall.

I can definitely remember it being a bingo hall at some point.
Can't remember the tram sheds
Really enjoy looking at old pictures of Bradford and remembering things from my childhood that are no longer there. Wish I'd had the foresight to take a few photos of around where I lived as a kid as it's all gone now and been built on.

Certainly were Dave…That walk up to the Avenue for City fans was always entertaining to say the least.
When I look at the all wooden back to back stands , football/ cricket, it makes me shudder!

Went to a good few local derbies.

My dad was an avenue fan as he was brought up on the Canterbury estate.

I think there was an avenue supporter who was supposed to be as 'ard as nails, Jim Concannon I think they called him.

Avenue were usually the better team, but I was always a City fan, always.

I had to share a bus many times after dropping the then girl friend now wife off, I believe it was Kevin Concannon and a lad called Ronnie Hill needless to say they enjoyed the ride up from Foster square to Bradford Moor, the ironic thing was many years latter I worked at GEC Foundries at Thornbury and gave Ronnie a lift most mornings when we moved over Wibsey, the subject of Avenue/City derbies were never brought up.

I have it in my mind that Tommy Holindrake, Patsy’s brother was an Avenue fan originally before he wandered over to VP. Can you remember Dave?

Both Tommy and Patsy Hollinger were Bradford City fans as long I've know them, never did Patsy's Travel Club, of the two I knew Tommy the better, the last I heard from Tommy was at the memorial service before Covid and Patsy was running "The Star" in town but Tommy said he was not a well man, I didn't see Tommy at the memorial service the other week, he usually attends them.

Thats all I have known them, as City, but I had a Canterbury Avenue connection in my mind , that’s where I may be deluding myself with the Avenue link with Tommy?
