Did anyone see the Sterling 'dive'? How did the ref give that

    https://streamja.com/EGZ3

Is that the worst dive ever or has anyone got any more blatant ones they have seen?

    It wasn’t a dive.

He kicked the floor and fell over.

Wasn't a dive. He tripped up. What are them officials doing behind the goal? They need sacking off. Sterling should've owned up. He's missed a good bit of PR there for himself.

Agree. It was clearly an involuntary trip, not a dive. Undoubtedly he should have owned up. But sportsmanship like that is rarely seen in football these days.

Can't remember many acts of sportsmanship at that level, maybe Fowler's pen against Arsenal in 97 or Di Canio v Everton in 2000

Not a dive he tripped and he knew it
What he didn't do was to own up to it and give thenm the possession back
He could have just rolled the ball to the keeper from the spot
Terrible terrible role model to all his young followers
Should be fined for his actions

The Di Canio incident was as good as I've seen, here a comment from Everton Football Club :
With clock about to tick into the 90th minute and the game poised at 1-1, it was a moment the 31,260 supporters in Goodison that afternoon will never forget. Indeed, the Italian was given a standing ovation for that act alone.

Embarrassing. The penalty taker should have just tapped it back to the keeper from the spot. Very poor from Man City I thought

Does him not owning up not make what was a trip into a dive though?

His actions by not saying anything should be seriously scrutinized

Crazy some of these replies. Do you call for defenders to own up to fouling players when the referee doesn’t give it? This is no different. The ref makes a call and that’s the decision, it’s not for players to take matters into their own hands.

He didn’t dive, he clearly just tripped up and didn’t appeal. The blame is solely on the ref, Sterling did nothing wrong.

Exactly. One wonders if the reaction would have been anything like this if it was a Shakhtar player, or any other player than Raheem Sterling for that matter.

Yep i agree, he could have said something but i doubt the referee could or would have changed his mind.

Your argument, was talked about on talksport after the match.. Last minute of the manchester derby on sunday Stirling and smalling racing into the area to reach a through ball. Stirling gets the first touch, smalling takes him down but the referee gives a corner... Does smalling get up and say you made a mistake referee, it should be a penalty? Does he chuff.

The difference is when going into a challenge it can often be hard to know if you made any contact with the ball and if contact with the player came before or after. When you kick the ground and trip though you know 100% that is what has happened. So really for a fair comparison, it would need to be a Smalling intentionally taking out Sterling having made no attempt at the ball and the pen not being given and Smalling not saying anything. We don't really see many examples of that though as refs don't really get those decisions wrong as its obvious

There are plenty of examples of a defender clipping a player in the box and the ref not giving a penalty. The defender knows he’s made contact and therefore that should be a penalty. Or a handball, maybe Roofe for Leeds the other week, not a defender but should he have owned up and had the goal disallowed?

Sterling is getting a crazy amount of criticism for something that players do all the time (and should do), getting on with the game and following the ref’s decision. We don’t like it when players argue with the ref and now people are saying he should correct the ref. The guy can’t win.

The referees decision should be final even if he is blind. If we're 0-0 in the last minute tomorrow and one of our players gets tackled by a sod of earth in the box and the ref gives a penalty that's fine by me. Don't think any of you would be happy if he chased after the ref to say he fell over by accident. We'd miss the penalty anyway.

really not sure what Sterling has done to merit such relentless stick and scrutiny from The Sun and similar shite rags. Didn't look like he dived but even if he did, hundreds of other active players could and have done similar and it would never, ever be front page news. In the past they've also attacked him for buying a house for his mother, and having the cheek to go to a night club, amongst other things. Really feel for the kid, comes across like a nice and shy lad when you listen to him in interviews.

What exactly are you going to fine him for? Someone else making a mistake?

    Strange post?

    Ungentalmanly conducted springs to mind
He did nothing illegal but not in the true spirit of the game in my mind
