So it seems some clubs are being shown for what they are. I haven't heard of any premier league payments being stopped or any premier league player not being paid but these two clubs have moved to give their non playing staff a 20% wage cut and in the wealth of the premier league, we the taxpayer are picking up the wages of many staff from clubs who wouldn't think twice about putting in a £20m bid for a bang average player.

Simply it seems to be taking advantage of a scheme that is there to help business that could go to the wall, but Mike Ashley and Daniel Levy see it as a way of reducing their own costs (the latter took £4m in wages and £3m in bonuses last year).

I expect teams in the lower leagues will have no option but to take this stance but in the richest league in the world, its quite simply taking the piss.

It appears Bournemouth can be added to this list, they have stopped payments to people who are housing their youth players. Am I right in saying I have read somewhere that Leeds United players have taken a paycut to ensure all non playing staff are paid?

Bradford Bulls have had to use this scheme, and that is no surprise because they don't have a pot to piss in, if this continues I would expect Bradford City to move to this, but in the Premier League it really seems that greed is good.

To be fair there is a real risk on the horizon for the Premier League clubs because not only is there a risk that clubs will have to return over £750mill to broadcasters if the season isn't completed before July 31st. There is a real chance if that happens we may see some PL teams going under.

Ideally, they would most likely want the players to lower their wages but the clubs can't really request that as there is a fear that it can be deemed a breach in contract and allow the player to leave for free. And the PFA are advising players against suggesting it themselves. I suspect a big part of what Newcastle and Spurs are hoping is that a situation like Barca happens where the Barca players initially rejected a wage reduction but backed down when the other staff were going to either be laid off or put on reduced wages

Clubs may generate a lot of cash and spend it but do many actually make any profit? No income means no spare cash so they are using the frameworks in place. If they cut players wages without agreement PFA would be all over them and players demanding to leave.

Not sure if the clubs have asked the players, but you would hope they would do, 10% cut or even less should cover the 20% of the wages they can not claim off the government.

Personally I think it is worse that companies that are paying out huge dividends are claiming on the scheme such as EasyJet

Spurs made £112m last year and the Chairman paid himself a £3m bonus. If I were earning £200k a week, I would be embarrassed to see the kitchen staff being told their wages were going to be cut.

The problem is most of the dividends will have already been agreed so can't be undone and airlines are like football clubs and their profit margins aren't massive. Virgin atlantic may make £2.8bn in revenue for example but their costs are £2.5bn. £300mill is obviously not pocket change but it doesn't take much to turn a profit into a loss as we saw a couple of years ago when the an issue with the engines in the 787 which makes up a third of their fleet meant for most of the year they were taking 4 planes at a time out of service to fix. So if taking 4 planes out of service caused a loss I suspect taking basically all out (but having to still fly them in phantom flights to keep their airport allocations) is putting them all at a loss and none of them will pay a dividend next year

His bonus was already agreed and paid by the time the accounts were published though. It's not like spurs could have predicted this.

And as non playing staff he is also most likely taking the paycut.

wasn’t it about £70m? With a massive chunk of that from getting so far in the champions league?

The problem is this scheme is being abused by these wealthy chairmen. It was created to help smaller companies from going bust and having to lay off their entire work force, not to help fat cats avoid paying wages to the plebs.
