He came with a lot of fanfare and it seems he was a bit underwhelming but it seems statistically he did 2 main areas of his job pretty well in comparison to a lot of L2 midfielders.

Appreciate we were over run in some games but he is 31 and no spring chicken. Was he the problem or do we need to compliment him better to get the best out of him?

Winning possession - 4th in the league with 338 tackles. Moxon 1st with 353.

Created Chances - 4th in the league with 80 created chances. Watt 1st with 124.

Interesting stats. Where's the best place to go to look at players stats?

He’s a good no frills player, some expected more but I’m not sure why he’s never been a creative goal scorer, which shows which area we need to improve because despite him being a holding kid he still had more goals and assists than anyone else who joined him in central midfield, including the attacking midfielder Jamie Walker. We need to recruit around him not to replace him, despite what a few on here think.

Its just a shame that most of his successful passes were sideways or backwards and not defence splitting, sorry the one against Northampton at home was, cut our defence right open.
Seriously though, he was much better than many made out, just needed a better attacking midfield around him.

The issue with him is he's surrounded by a poor midfield and negative tactics. He's busy trying to do everyone else's job as well as his own. To me his mistakes started creeping in in the last quarter of the game with tired looking underweight passes conceding possession. His job is that of Stuart McCall, break up attacks pass the ball to some one who can spray the ball about. Unfortunately there was nobody around him to do that so he was doing it himself.

Scored a few from his set pieces so I think you're going slightly over the top but I agree that I think we need someone better at set pieces this season.

His free kicks and corners are poor.

Smallwood can do his job well, breaking up play, redistributing possesion to the players around him. His issue is due to his age, an lack of speed, he isn't mobile. So Hughes put Gillead there to cover him, but the only real asset Gillead has is his engine, which isnt me knocking the guy, becahse we all know he puts 100% effort into his game, but he is technically limited in his game so Smallwood has to effectively do the job of 2 players. Put a solid box to box midfielder alongside Smallwood, someone who can do the attacking side of things, an we wont be having this problem next season
