I’m not saying we’d have survived up there. Just saying that the whole future of the club could/would have been different if we’d gone up and nobody could have foreseen such a shambolic decline in our fortunes since then. It’s a fine line between success and failure (in both football and investments)

That’s the optimistic viewpoint and I hope to God you are right but surely there’s only so long he will keep throwing good money after bad.

Sounds harsh but the one saving grace about not going up is we would have been in dire straights when we inevitably came back down. Just think of the absolute madness that Rahic undertook with a league one budget, we’d have IOUs all over the place.

What a few fans on here are saying, it is practically impossible to maintain our club in the Championship without a sugar daddy/mummy. We would need to generate millions every year just to keep us in.

What is obvious to me is that true competition in football is dying or even dead. The real competition is who has the biggest pockets. Without competition the game loses its magic for me: as a club we want to be striving to climb the leagues, that is where the excitement is. The la la land PL has been out of reach for years, now the Championship is also just about unattainable, the leagueS 1/2 will be following on, and the whole lot becomes stagnant. The top 6 in the PL already have itchy feet through lack of competitiveness within the PL,nwhich has now become 3 leagues in one.

If Rupp gets 85% of his money back he'll be fine, he knows its gone tits up with Edin and he wants out.

I just feel Gordon Gibb will come in with a low bid if we are relegated, not sure if thats a good or bad thing mind you lol

To cut his losses and avoid throwing good money after bad.
I can't see any way he's going to recoup his losses for years, if ever, and every year he keeps funding us is a bigger hole in his pocket .Not sure why he'd want to do that since he's not really a football fan nor has any Bradford connections.
It looks like he's currently doing the honourable thing out of guilt for his (albeit unwitting) part in the debacle, but how long will he keep haemorrhaging money ? Giving the club away, if he can find anyone who wants it in its current state, might be his best financial option.

It is not true we cannot afford promotion to the championship as the TV money increases dramatically and is set to go up again next season, Add increased ticket sales and we would survive

Each Championship Club receives a 'Solidarity Payment' from the Premier League of £4.3 million
    Each League One Club £650,000
    Each League Two Club £430,000
Although in our present circumstances the drop in income due to relegation might be more relevant

Businessmen/investors realise that they will have to make a loss on their investment and the best thing for them to do is to make the loss and walk away. They will want the loss to be as small as possible and if that means loosing £2m+ now rather than £3m or £4m in a year or two's time then that's what they'll do. That's business/investments.

Having Butterfield on a reported 30k a week and can't get a game or even on the bench proves that theory. Totally agree.

At the end of the day, Rupp (Rahic) and the German holding company will have paid far less for the club, than they originally intended.

On 24th May 2016 the pound bought €1.3091, this month it has sunk as low as €1.1343. So just given the currency exchange rates and the significant decline in the value of the pound, the owners could have saved a substantial sum.

You're simply wrong. Yes, Championsip clubs receive higher solidarity payments from the PL and also a larger share of the EFL TV contract. But their costs are significantly higher with a larger playing squad and much higher wages. Typical playing budgets are in the £12-20 mill range!

To give you an idea of the impact, the average loss in the bottom half of the Championsip is around £8mill per club per season! In most cases if not all that loss has to be made good by the club's owners.

Not sure you are right, Some clubs boost the average loss because they spend big chasing promotion to the Premier league and also have large expensive playing squads they find hard to reduce, The lower clubs spend less and lose less, For example Rotherham lost around half a million last year which is less than the 2 million we will lose, Some clubs like Burton and others can survive with good management and not selling the players that got them there such as Barnsley,

Exactly and all because of the greedy bastards. I’ve been saying it for years money has ruined the game. We need a scandal or some sort of reset of proportions we could only dream about to save the game.

I agree, not sure what can be done tbh. Too many interested parties who don’t really care about the game and certainly couldn’t careless if the lower leagues suffer or stop existing. It would take an enormous amount of will to turn it around now.

    Even stranger developments!!!

“Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet has "demanded" that the English Football League acquires the League One club.

The Belgian, who took control of the Addicks in 2014, has blamed fans for vandalising several of his properties in his homeland in recent days.

Duchatelet said the change in the EFL's profitability and sustainability rules in 2014 had "dramatically increased the financial burden on shareholders".

Charlton have been officially up for sale since the end of 2017.

The EFL confirmed it had received a request from Duchatelet, which it "will review and subsequently respond to as appropriate".
