Seemed like an idea worth discussing to me, although admittedly I only heard a brief outline on the radio. If the numbers raised were significant and greatly helped the NHS then I'd say it's negligent to not at least do a few sums.

Not sure what he is suggesting? Is it instead of paying for the testing they get vaccines now but then pay the money into the nhs for the testing that they are no longer getting? If so for how long?

That's basically it. In weeks where no-one comes back positive meaning no additional repeat tests, you are looking at £15k a week being spent on testing by each club. It's also wasting resources and capacity to have the tests carried out. Then there are the costs related to the strict COVID protocols football is trying to follow. He is saying that if players got the vaccine so testing could be scaled back or removed fully and protocols could be relaxed the clubs could still pay that money out but it can go into things like the NHS or other ways to support the vulnerable. Even if it was just a month the clubs agreed to that would be £5.5mill from the PL and EFL that could be used more productively in the fight against COVID

£15k a week per team? That is probably about 200 PCR tests per team. Seems excessive for most clubs, especially as you drop down the leagues.

Are they even using PCR tests now or have they moved onto the lateral flow test which are much cheaper

You have to remember its twice a week and has to be any member of the first-team staff and any other staff member who comes into contact with these people. Some clubs are spending even more than that as they are also testing any staff who come into contact with members of staff who have contact with the first team and their u23/u18 teams as well even if these teams aren't playing matches so they can call them up if needed (Like Villa today, many of their u18's haven't played since the end of November but have still been having once a week tests in case of situations like this as they need 2 negatives in a week to be allowed to be called up)

And PL clubs I believe are using PCR because the accuracy levels of lateral flow aren't high enough. The EFL were requiring PCR but there was talk of them letting clubs them use Lateral Flow but not sure its gone through yet
