Sad week for the Iron fans, relegated from the National League to the 6th tier.

10 years ago they were in the Championship and now facing the prospect of visits to the likes of Farsley.

Let's hope they can attract decent investors and do a 'Stockport' and get back to the football league, but it's going to be a long haul you would think

In 2019 they played Peterborough United in the league. In 2023 they will be playing Peterborough Sports.

There are a few other former league clubs at that level. Darlington, Chester, Scarborough, Boston, Kidderminster and Hereford. Some in a new phoenix model due to going bust in the past. However Scunthorpe are the only one to have been as high as the second tier in recent history.

The demise of Bury was a sad time (they were in the second tier until 1999.) The Phoenix club now play in NWCFL PREMIER DIVISION so the ninth tier! Always liked Bury as an away venue. With Oldham in the National League and Rochdale virtually doomed to the same fate, the north and east greater Manchester clubs will all have gone.

Why should we hope for that, exactly?

What difference does it make to us how good or poor Scunthorpe are

Doesn't make any difference to us. I would prefer to see the likes of Scunny and other traditional ex EFL clubs in the league over the likes of Salford and Forest Green

Ok, fair enough, any reason why? Just nostalgia/'footballing romance'?

You could count on Bury, Oldham, Scunthorpe, etc to bring several hundred, or even upwards of a thousands to games. Salford in a battle for automatic promotion struggled to sell 500 tickets to Stockport down the road in a 5th v 6th game.

Unbacked millionaire ego clubs are not what people want to see replacing historic generation old supported community clubs is the point being made here.

Despite my preference for traditional football league clubs such as Notts Co, Chesterfield, Oldham etc, i wouldn't like to see a return to re-election process.

I guess you could call it nostalgia over seeing rich mens toys like Salford progressing, who will never have the interest of local supporters in the same numbers as the likes of Notts Co etc

Aye, for years the Southern & Northern League winners were excluded, with existing league clubs simply re-electing.

I'm not a fan of re-election. I think you should be where you are on merit.

However that doesn't change the fact I hate these tinpot side like Salford who have been bankrolled to such a level and no one has joined them for the ride.

I actually like what has happened at Wrexham because the fans are embracing it.

    Totally agree.

Oldham’s last home game saw an Attendance of 7,391!

Salford got An Attendance of 3,412 versus Leyton Orient!! Salford average gate (often bumped up by large numbers of visiting fans is 2,856.

Salford and a host of these tiny clubs like Harrogate Town (average attendance 2,234) really offer very little other than a novelty value.

Wrexham (average 9,960), Notts county (7,745), Chesterfield (6,857), Oldham (6,697), Southend (5,864), are mature clubs, well supported and make for a far more interesting contest.

Even worse when Gainsborough Trinity have to put out a statement to say Scunthorpe sharing their ground is news to them.

Yeah it's not a good sign when Scunthorpe issue a statement and then Gainsborough reply with this.

It surprised me to say the least that David Hilton who bought Scunny ever passed the EFL's Owner & Director Test to have his takeover ratified. The EFL and the NL had promised to tighten up the ODT after a couple of recent problems including Bury. They may not have done enough to improve matters. Now it appears that the FA is getting involved and may try to undo the takeover in footballing terms. As a convicted fraudster, he wouldn't pass the current ODT unless he had failed to inform the EFL/NL of his criminal record. That's quite possible of course but it suggests that the EFL is lacking in its own approval processes. It wouldn't be the first time that a convicted fraudster has committed further fraud and unless EFL ups its own game, he may not be the last.

Sad to see Scunthorpe United in such a mess. Their old ground, the Old Show Ground, was my favourite away ground back in the 70s and 80s.

Yes, I also liked their old ground. The 'new' one is still owned by Peter Swann and not by Scunny themselves. It's a very valuable site locationwise and given the dodgy position of their family business - Wilko's - it woudn't surprise me to see it demolished and either integrated into the retail park next door or made available for housing.
