Clearly it is not going into the youth setup where they are begging for 3 members of staff to work 40 hours a week for free.

    Absolutely tinpot.

Unearthing gems is basically what has kept this club going in the past and it seems we would rather hire someone to do Sparks job for him in David Sharpe than spend some money on developing the youth.

I don't agree with it, but it's fairly common throughout the leagues to have volunteers or unpaid "interns" in these roles.

I can't remember who it was but a few months ago I saw an advert for a league 1 club for a volunteer to manage the volunteer analysts!

Exactly, common occurrence even in some lower league clubs, not us though. Nothing to see here.

If they want a volunteer to help them spell check their adverts I'm sure there are plenty on here who would welcome the "opportunty "?

It’s scandalous I don’t care who else adopts it we shouldn’t be in my opinion. If this is aimed at students they still need to study and live? Who’s paying for that if they’re doing up to 40 hours free labour. Or is this aimed at retired professionals doing us a favour? How about we see youth development as one of our strategic priorities that has earned the club some good returns over the last few years and we want to enhance that by having skilled current professionals?

Nah it’s not the way we doing things here…

Another shooting the club down with no knowledge. Why don’t you reserve judgement until you’ve studied the Academy training methods then make a judgement. You may be surprised.

What’s is there to study? Bradford city a professional football club has put out a job advertisement for 3 skilled roles in its academy no salary or payment for up to 40 hours work.

No angle makes this look good. But please share your pearls of wisdom why any poor sod would want to do that for free?

Going back a good few years now, but the Peterborough chairman spoke on a similar topic a few years back on his podcast. They were getting stick for an unpaid analyst role but as he said, it's norm but it goes one of two ways. If you're willing and good at your role and take on the courses and show promise, you'll either get a full time offer or an offer elsewhere. You wont be unpaid for long. He had vacancies because his first team lad went to Man United or Man City and earning 4 times what he was, one of the Man clubs but cant remember which. Fairly certain he said there was one hole because an academy analyst of his got a full time offer elsewhere.

If not, the club can easily move you on or you realise it's not for you. It's crap that unpaid volunteering is still a thing in a multi billion pound industry, but they are "get your foot in the door" roles so there isn't going to be any great commitment. Not appealing, but is what it is if you want to try get into the business.

Come on roger look at some of the key tasks listed for each role, some of which I imagine are pretty niche and some of which will actually fall under compliance and welfare guidelines. We aren't talking about seeking a wet behind the ears, 17 year old social media expert here to film a youth game

Just because others do it, it doesn't make it right. Other clubs have been ripped to pieces for it, and as such so should ours.

Many professional clubs are adopting this stance making out they are doing folk a favour by "enhancing a CV"

It's a very poor look all round

I understand why companies use internships to provide experience to potential employees .. and be able to have a good look at them. We employ interns where I work but they are limited in time and aren't intended to replace what would otherwise be a full time, paid job. They are intended as add-ons. Our internships are to help the person get some hands on experience rather than employing somebody on the cheap.

It's particularly galling to see that the 3 jobs advertised are all attached to the Academy .. and half the costs of the academy incurred by the club are paid for by the PL under the EPPP scheme. We receive about £0.5m from the PL to fund our academy. It's not as though the club would be paying the full whack for the 3 roles. Every little help I'm sure is the club's mantra but this just doesn't feel right to me.

As you say, some just look for anything to knock the club.

Or perhaps dial up the non-financial benefits e.g. a season ticket, meals, coaching/mentoring, skills training, opportunity to use the work as evidence of professional development and qualifications etc etc...

And before someone says "well, they could do that", my point is that the club should be up front and championing these things not keeping it in the back pocket in case someone asks.

Remember how there was so much uproar about zero hours contracts a while back? This isn't very dissimilar.

People volunteer all over the country to run this or that aspect or a club in every village, town and city up and down the country.

Football volunteers are some of the most dedicated out there, putting in hours and hours to work with kids and make sure games go ahead for all ages each weekend.

I've no doubt some of those people would relish the chance to do the same at a league football club.

People are making way too much of this. The reality is that clubs at his level can't afford to pay all of these roles a full time wage. Academies are full of volunteers and without them you have 1 of 3 options:
    - Don't have academies
    - Take money away from the first team
    - Have an academy that is lacking key staff

I've said it many times on here but football as a whole is a very poor paying industry away from the players and that won't be changing any time soon. Without volunteers the academy structure collapses.

I could understand it if it was part of an educational placement, where someone is learning the job for a few months alongside studying.

40 hours unpaid means it's only available to people who've already retired or younger people with wealthy families who can support them. It's the same across quite a few industries now, unpaid internships are effectively locking out all but the wealthiest in society. Those that aren't as rich but may have the talent don't get a look in because they need to support themselves.

Honestly don't think this is a route the club should be going down. Especially in a place like Bradford and particularly at a club like City who attempt to push an inclusivity narrative in a lot of other areas.

Would you rather we got rid of all volunteer roles and took a chunk out of the wage budget for the 1st team? A lot of people do sandwich degrees so this is perfect for them to do in their year placement.
If we were to say next season we'll only have a midtable budget but we pay everyone a wage I doubt there will be many people accepting it if we finish mid table again. If football paid everyone fairly then players wouldn't be paid what they are.
