As mentioned in today's match thread, we leave the impression of not being very good at doing what the thread title says, but certainly good enough at holding on to winning positions. I'd guess that will be the case for many, even most, sides, though I only have records for City. Here's what City have done lately: @bailiff bridge bantam@bailiff bridge bantam

    .............HT lead...HT trail......lead anytime...trail anytime
    2023/4: 10-1-0.....0-3-14.......19-3-2.............4-6-15
    2022/3: 15-4-1.....2-2-6.........20-6-1.............2-4-10
    2021/2: 9-3-2.......1-2-7.........14-4-5.............2-6-16
    2020/1: 9-0-1.......1-1-12.......16-3-4.............2-4-19
    2019/20: 7-2-1.....2-3-6.........15-5-4.............3-3-11
    2018/9: 10-3-0.....0-1-18.......11-3-3.............0-1-27 (relegation season)
    2017/8: 12-2-1.....1-2-10.......18-5-3.............1-4-19
    2016/7: 9-5-2.......2-2-4.........20-7-2.............5-10-7
    2015/6: 13-2-2.....0-1-6.........23-3-3............1-4-12
    2014/5: 9-4-2.......0-3-7........16-6-3.............1-6-15
    2013/4: 9-2-1.......2-7-8........14-6-3.............2-9-14
    2012/3: 11-2-0......0-4-8........18-3-2............2-7-13 (promotion season)

Note that one can both lead and trail in the same match, so any given match can end up in more than one category for a season. One should also note that late goals that give the other side little to no time to respond may skew the numbers somewhat.

The numbers suggest that my opening sentence above is reasonable. Last season was one of our better ones for rescuing points; 2016 under McCall was also good.

I’m foolish to put a ht/ft bet on City every match. Been doing it for about five years with little return. Now I see it in black and white, perhaps I’ll spend my 5€ on pre match beer instead!

if im reading these right there are some quite fascinating swings in performance over the years, which you'd assume is largely down to the approach of each manager in charge at that time.

    Even just looking at the last two full seasons;

In hughes's full season in charge 2022/23, we were ahead 19 times at half time compared to only 11 last year. The same year we were only ever behind 16 times, compared to 25 in the part hughes / part alexander year.

You can probably see Hughes was more pragmatic, try get ahead and hold what we have, whereas Alexanders approach is what will be will be, and see how games pan out and is likely some of the reasons as to why his winning/losing spells are as streaky aswell.
