I wouldn't mind knowing the overall stats on how many yellows and reds home and away teams get.

But yes, I'd say every single measure leaning from marginal-to-moderate one way suggests he's a referee over-compensating for some sort of insecurity by punishing home sides with regularity.

There may be some psychological, subliminal influence going on here. I can understand how it happens.

Overall, there is a huge culture of utter bs built around referees being the pantomime villain. The usual suspects on boards like this up and down the country will decry the standard of refereeing from now until their final post. The problem lies in the expectation that the referee should manage the game like they would in the stands. They just can't deal with the impartiality of a referee making decisions regarding their team. I think the standard of refereeing is adequate but one thing I do now for certain is that the most vocal critics of referees will always remain the most vocal critics and probably always have, regardless of actual standards.

The other issue is the lack of empathy and understanding people have of what being a referee involves. It is nigh on impossible to get even 90% of decisions right. It's easy for us in the stands because if in any doubt, it's a city ball. For the neutral in the middle they either have a player obstructing their view or a crap angle from pitch level which means they have to spend half their time guessing.

Two irrefutable conclusions for me and I'm sure people may disagree but if they do they have to think harder...

    1. The standard will never be better than it currently is. Unless the FA pass a ruling that says a referee must give it City's way in any case of doubt, there will as always be a hard core who detest referees.

    2. Anyone on this board who was told to ref an efl game would be getting a police escort from the ground within 15 minutes of kick off.

As far as I'm aware, he didn't suffer concussion.

I understand he took a whack to an eye that forced partial closure

But a yellow card in that instance is for deliberate time wasting. It’s utter fantasy to believe that he was deliberately wasting time when we were 4-0 up and comfortably managing the game. That was jobsworth reffing of the highest order. Ridiculous decision.

I'd wager 9/10 refs wouldn't have even thought of giving a yellow for that, were 4-0 FFS and on the ascendency, not exactly a reason to time time waste. Common sense doesn't seem to exist in today's world.

    Straight from Ifab...

The referee awards a free kick but an opponent prevents the free kick being taken quickly. What is the referee’s decision?

The offending player must be cautioned (yellow card) for delaying the restart of play.

But Smallwood wasn’t the opponent, he was the person who was taking the free kick.

It was the fact that it wasn’t taken quickly which apparently lead to the booking.

Can you check what the rules are in that case?

Is there a ‘reasonable’ amount of time?

    If yes what is it?

    When does the clock start?

That has got to be for players standing in front of the ball not someone taking a free kick 30 yards away.

Ah that's fair enough. I hadn't remembered the incident. He got booked for taking too long then. I don't think a referee should be factoring in the scoreline on this judgement. It just muddies the water.

The time limit thing is a pertinent point mind. I'm not sure how on earth people expect referees to be consistent on timewasting when there is no time limit.

    https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-13---free-kicks

I assume this is your source. There is nothing in this section about the team awarded the free kick having to take the kick in a certain time scale.

It does state, ‘Feinting to take a free kick to confuse opponents is permitted as part of football’.

As far as I could see, Smallwood halted his run due to a couple of MK players noticeably repositioning themselves.

Looks like Seb Stockbridge has produced 54 yellows for both home and away sides this season across 20 games.

Sounds more promising. I was in the car driving home on sat and Raynor mentioned using a concussion sub for Richards, just assumed we did in the end.

In any event, I'll be hoping we don't get Mr Yates again any time soon.

Despite the discrepancies between home and away sides, I think he's the kind to punish us away from home too, just to show how not influenced by big reputations he is.

While being massively influenced by big reputations.
