What's the difference between queueing at IKEA and queuing at at Westminster?

At IKEA you get a cabinet that works.

    I'll get me coat.

As opposed to this government, which was badly constructed to start with and has been seriously malfunctioning, or intermittently not working at all, since January.

I could delve back into ancient history and research the last ever Labour Government in the UK . I think records may have been deleted though during the search for WMD , or the Dr kelly cover up , and of course the lost pension funds that they pinched , and any dodgy receipts kicking round for gold bullion reserves sold at mates rates .

Or the ten years of economic prosperity until the bankers crashed the world economy. And paying off the national debt. And record popularity ratings for the NHS. And the best pandemic planning & preparedness in the world (which the Tories later destroyed, leaving us with the highest death rate in Europe).
We can all bandy around selective facts about particular governments.
But I've never seen one so spectacularly unravel so soon into their period of office. By comparison with every Tory and Labour government of my lifetime this one appears to take incompetence to uniquely high levels.

Unraveled since when ?, on your say so . The problem is Labour need everyone over 30 to have amnesia , illegal wars thousands murdered by Bush and Blair , the thousands like me who had their pensions stolen , the fact Labour introduced zero hour contracts , they privatised 7% of the NHS , they introduced and implemented PFI which lost 27000 hospital beds and left a financial millstone around the annual budget . They pardoned republican murders , yet chased british troops who were under orders , they signed EU treaties , which Blair promised to hold a referendum on then lied . They lost touch with their core vote in Scotland and the North . They allowed Momentum and Corbyn to take control and turn it into a metropolitan london based cult . They then appoint a multi - millionaire ex director of public prosecutions to lead the " party of the working class " , they then appoint a dispicable racist Bradford MP to to the front bench , Labour are finished and unless they either remove Momentum , McClusky etc from the executive or form another centralist party they are doomed . I know your feelings about Blair and Brown , but they formed the last labour government . labour dont learn form past mistakes they compound them .

This is suppose to be a conservative government with a big majority and so far we have elected a weak lib dem cast off.

On immigration this government was voted in on controlled immigration and to get the numbers down but then we find out the clown in number ten wants to give 3 million passports away just to one place in the world not forgetting the weak response to the illegal channel crossings.

Tonight we get more limp handed action on law and order in london with police been attacked and nearly every conservative MP in hiding of frightened to say anything of the violence.

I wait on the grooming gangs report release and the bbc license fee of what to do about it (End the license fee)but by going on what this soft tory government have done so far ,it will be a let down.

It's now clear as daylight to all but the most uncritical hard-line Tory supporters that this current government has mishandled the pandemic in spades. Public confidence in them has plummeted. Numerous scientists and health chiefs are now openly criticising them and calling for a coherent strategy and workable plans.
Nearly every decision they have either ducked, dithered or got wrong. They make routine claims for world beating this and that which they constantly fail to deliver. They are handing responsibility for vital public health matters like track and trace to companies like Serco, despite their numerous previous failures, and ignoring local public health teams who have the necessary expertise. We have companies exporting PPE while our care staff go without, because the government hasn't answered their offers to help. The litany of screw-ups goes on and on.

We are now the sick man of Europe and the laughing stock of the world. We have a poor man's Trump as PM, who is idle, deceitful, completely unsuited to making tough decisions and is primarily driven by his own image and ego. Only a narcissistic fool could claim to be proud of our pandemic response on the day we had more deaths than the rest of Europe put together.

Our economy will be in the toilet for years; thousands have died unnecessarily; many thousands will lose jobs and businesses. Some of this was inevitable, but many other countries have handled it far better. The extent and longevity of it is down to this government's arrogance, sloth and incompetence. And this time they can't blame Labour. It's entirely down to their own (in)actions.

Yes, Labour have made mistakes, as all governments and parties do. But I believe that Starmer is a safe pair of hands who will gradually turn the LP into a capable centre left party that will be a credible alternative government. It will take time to recover from the Corbyn fiasco but it will happen. Starmer was born in a council house BTW. He's the son of a toolmaker who got where he is today by his own efforts and brains. He wasn't born into privilege like Johnson & co.

Yes, Labour has lost touch with some of its northern heartlands. But politics is changing with the shape of our economy and our demographics. The industrial working class that Labour sprang from and represented is dying out. The (mostly) ageing remnants of that workforce tends to be very socially conservative in its views and now looks to the Tories to uphold those ideas. Labour is now the representative party of those with more socially liberal views. It's never going back to the old LP, which represented working men against the 'bosses' but was frequently racist and misogynistic in doing so. The factories, mills, mines and docks that supported that LP mostly don't exist any more. It would be madness to try to cling onto that past.
Some 50% of young people go to university these days. All the evidence is that the more people are exposed to higher education the more liberal their views become. Women are generally less keen on the hard-line market philosophies that have seen childcare and elderly care services decimated under austerity. If Labour can get its act together under Starmer there is every reason why it can get back into government and start to rebuild the damage that 15 years of Tory austerity and economic mismanagent will have done to our society. It's a big ask, but it needs to be done.

Nope. I made a short, jokey reply (#24) to Offside's post #22, then he waded in with the serious political stuff (#25) which I replied to in kind.

Peaceful mass protests all over the country. A small minority of idiots cause trouble. They aren't representative of most young people. And most of them will grow out of it.
