Socail media has unleashed a monster that, collectively, we don't fully know how to control. I think it gives idiots a platform they could only dream of in the pre fb/twitter days.
I think the key is self control and regulating how much time you spend on it.
I must admit at one point i was getting sucked into it. It was getting to the point that the first thing i thought when going anywhere was 'i need to check in on fb. I need to post a photo etc etc.' Although not quite at the point of posting pictures of my breakfast. Eventually you forget how to relax and enjoy life. It just becomes a big game to harvest likes.
Now i hardly go on fb. I actively avoid checking my timeline because of all the attention seekers. I sometimes check the city fb groups, but usually find forum a better source of info

Apart from City related football forums, I never use social media, and have never opened accounts on Facebook and Twatter, doesnt appeal to me in the slightest. Perhaps a generation thing with me?

I find it quite useful.
Just last night I got info about the events for the boy's football team 25 year anniversary; info and discussion about the girl's end of season cheer leading dance; work colleagues discussing an issue and also a cousin who lives miles away having a chat.Stop hovering to collapse... Perhaps indeed age plays a role, as I grew up before cellphones became widespread and personal computing took off (remember the Commodore 64 -- who could ever need more memory? -- and then the great leaps forward when the IBM PC became the PC AT and XT (!). and word processors evolved from simple line editors (!!), and GUI's came in (!!!)). The craze for social media has just passed me by completely, so no need to even think of deleting any accounts. City-related fora are about as far as I go in the social media line.

I opened a Face Book account for about a year, decided it's Shite, really Shite, closed it, never to be opened again.
Twitter looks even worse. -

I dumped my face book years ago and I've never opened twatter because as mush as I like my mates I don't care what they're having for tea and I have the ability to talk to them via telephone or even better face to face. Anything I would be interested in reading on there is available without signing up. I also don't really enjoy having some cretin I didn't like at school 20 odd years ago trying to reminisce with me about stuff that I can't remember, didn't happen or I didn't enjoy in the first place.

I’m on twotter which I use mainly to do any complaints to companies as they seem to respond quicker.
Still on Facebook but am not friends with anyone at the company I currently work for.
5 years ago my Facebook friends helped me get through stuff that was happening as there was always someone there and I could vent with no cares in the world. -
