Players contracts beyond this season 2018/2019

    There is continuous mention of a number of players being under contract for next season. Does anyone have an exact list of who these players are, please? At least then when we are posting about what needs to happen etc. we would have some certainty in relation to these players.

    Here are the players who will still be on contract at VP next season ..

    O'Donnell
    Riley
    O'Connor
    Scannell
    Reeves
    Doyle
    Robinson
    McCarten
    Mellor
    Patrick
    Akpan
    Wood
    Gibson
    Sykes-Kenworthy
    Staunton
    Wright

    That's 16 in total with 14 13 ending in 2020 and two three (Wood, O'Connor and Staunton) in 2021. If all of these were placed on the transfer list in the summer, I don't envisage many takers even assuming that they can be 'encouraged' to leave. And I seriously doubt that any of them would justify a transfer fee given the season they have had. If we want to get rid, we'll end up having to pay them off for next season's contract or pay something to a new club to subsidise their wages elsewhere. I doubt there will be a cheap option to place us in a position to assemble a good squad for next season.

    Our current and last goalkeeper both came to us as their teams were relegated from League One and they had clauses in their Contract, which allowed them to leave their former clubs.

    On that basis, I anticipate that some of our squad will have comparable Contracts and may leave if we go down (Scannell, Riley and O’Donnell?).

    I always think it seems strange that clubs apparently do not have clauses in the contracts which could see them release players if we are relegated, or see a reduction in their salary to the league average in which the club operates.

    At the moment McCartan and Gibson have gone out on loan. I think McCartan for sure and Gibson to a lesser extent will not want to return, so could leave on mutual consent.

    So that could see the figure reduce to say 12. Sykes-Kenworthy, Staunton and perhaps Patrick are likely to be on lower wages, so would not have a dramatic impact on wages. Robinson’s situation is uncertain and he could end up leaving, depending on the outcome of his suspension.

    Wouldn't surprise me if one or 2 didn't have a release clause in their contract in case of relegation. O'Donnell certainly did with Northampton before

    So we have 16 for definite. If as you say we offload McCarten, Gibson and say Patrick takes us down to 13. If we bring in 7 good/decent players of the calibre who will battle/perform (as per Blackpool yesterday when most of their players were cast offs from other clubs) and give these 13 the motivation to perform we would have a decent squad of 20 players. Add 2 or 3 decent young loanees (Burke/Cullen calibre) plus maybe a couple of our own young players to be on the bench if needed, and with a full pre-season organised properly to get them all fit and raring to go, then we should be capable of having a decent shot at promotion from League 2 - IMO.

    So, when considering all relevant factors who would like to see still here and/or who do you think is realistic? For what it’s worth, this is mine:

    O'Donnell
    Doyle
    Robinson
    Mellor
    Wood
    Sykes-Kenworthy
    Staunton

    Doyle would be the biggest question mark, mainly from a wages prospective. However I’m speculating and assuming they will be high when in reality I have no idea. With the right players around him, I believe he’s a good player.

    Really? He had an opportunity to score yesterday and failed, but his lack of reaction when he missed was non existent and at a club who needed all three points. Sorry I don’t want players who cannot be arsed trying their utmost.

    The same can be said about performances, and whose fault it is ?
    Over the last fortnight or so, I bet you could merge 20 threads into just four or five.

    In many of the other references to the squad, in previous threads, then the original title issue has often been about other matters and drifted onto the subject.
    I produced the list of 16 several weeks ago.
    I will change the title of the thread to cover other areas which could be used to start another thread.
    If you see something in a new thread which deals with these specific issues, just report it and the Mods can consider merging them.

    Let's not kid ourselves if we can move on half of those it would be a result!. Like it or not they have a contract some on good money why would they push off permanently for less ? . This mess will weigh us down for a long time and I'm of the opinion that there is worse to come. This time next year we will be nearer Non League than League 1 !. Bradford City have all the credentials to go out of existence
