Didn’t a goalie captain win the last World Cup and the 2010 one? Tbf I’d stick with Paudie though he could be our captain for a good few years to come if we move up the leagues with him.

I liked the look of Canavan on Tuesday.
Can't see us losing too many ariel battles now at the back with both him and Paudie.
Both nearly combined for a set piece goal at the other end which was refreshing to see.

Still feel a goalie captain at L2 level is a waste of potential inspiration further up the pitch.

O'Donnell back in for me too. Hornby has made enough mistakes not to have too much of a case of he was dropped.

ROD's currently the better keeper of the two so imo it makes sense to bring him back in as soon as he's fit.

That would mean 4 centre halves strung out along the back 4 though. It'd hardly be pretty to watch and probably non existent in the attacking 3rd. It's pretty much Colin Todd esque!

Agree, I think Hornby has too many reckless moments.

When Staunton has gone forward, he has looked pretty good, tho I wouldn't drop Wood for him just yet.

Not sure if previous tactics or just down to ROD, but he never seemed that comfortable or able to make quick crafty decisions at getting the ball out quickly, or that effective at playing out to the back line. 50/50 but coming off the fence, my preference is Hornby.

Hornby has done well since he came in apart from a couple of rush of blood to the head moments ,so I would stick with him plus the back 4 seem more settled with him behind them.

I think we’ve a decent squad but finding a fluent first 11 might take time and we might end up mixing and matching for the rest of this season.

I'm not sure about speed off the line, he was done at Exeter for the penalty due to being slow off the line and was very nearly caught the week before in the home game.

Like said earlier pros and cons for both although do feel O'Donnell does concede some soft goals particular near post and outside box ones.

What is the contract situation with both, do we stick with whoever is under contract for next year to create a bit of stability and understanding?

We need a new number 1 next season for when we are challenging for the title.

Just a solid, safe pair of hands who doesn’t come charging off his line like Hornby or have crisp packet hands like O’Donnell. A Colin Doyle type.

I would stick with Hornby for now. His speed of thought re distribution is good. A good shot stopper, seems to improve with each game he plays. Not perfect - name me a L2 keeper that is - in his positional sense, but again, with games under his belt that'll hopefully get better. On another issue with O'Donnell being in the first eleven. If and when he does return, Paudie or Canavan should be captain not him as a goalie. Goalie captains are a nonsense. How can they shout and inspire, read and see the action in the danger areas when they're stood on the goal line bloody miles away from what's happening further up the pitch?

You're right Wilsden. But I would say captains in world class teams aren't as important as they are in League 2. All the top teams have seven or eight 'captains' on the pitch whether it's by name or not. The very top players are naturally proactive. in our league, much more reactive. And then's when you need a big leader in the centre of the action. So totally agree with you about Paudie.

I don't buy this argument. Like Trueman said in his press conference today, when O'Donnell is back in the side and captain again, Paudie's behaviour and leadership won't change. He doesn't need a piece of cloth to give him the ability to leed.

He’s let in a few soft ones this year which led to many to suggesting Hornby needed a run before ROD was injured. Now we’ve seen Hornby over an extended period though I don’t feel he’s any more solid though. He has had a tighter defence in front of him, which ROD didn’t benefit from earlier in the year.

We can get by in this second half of the season with ROD though.

Can't remember Peter Shilton as captain{but have a lousy memory). He didn't half command his box though and every one of the defenders in front of him knew exactly what he expected from them even though he was only 18.

No, he doesn't need a piece of cloth, but if he had it at least he won't do an AOC and treat it with contempt.

I mean, at least he's a little tougher when it comes to the stitching rubbing his arm ;)

    Not forgiven AOC for that.

Hornby by a mile, if you look at the amount of shots from outside the box that O'Donnell doesn’t get to resulting in more often than not is a goal, his shot stopping at close range can’t be faulted but as I said from outside the box he gets done easily, he then claps his hands to blame his defence for not closing the opponents down, there might be some minor truth in that but overall for me he gets beat to easily from outside the box.
