I am a long time Swindon fan. Peter was the best goalie we've ever had and I'm not surprised to see so many Bantams fans sharing that view. He was such a modest and unassuming man but what an incredibly agile and brave goalie. He played some blinders for us and none of us fans could ever understand how we let him go. Our loss was your gain. There was a match against the Bantams at Swindon in the mid 70's where he made one incredible save after another and stopped Swindon scoring. Such was the esteem he was held in that the whole Swindon crowd started singing "One Peter Downsborough".
I sincerely hope there will be a tribute to him when we play you on Saturday. A total legend for both our clubs.
I hope Stephen Derby is getting on OK. Smashing lad and everyone at Swindon was devastated by the news of his illness. It puts football rivalry into perspective. May the best team win on Saturday. Apologies for coming on here but I wanted to see the Bantams fans tributes. Cheers.

Not seen news of this.
Still the best keeper I have seen playing for City
Fitting that we play Swindon next week, so both clubs can remember him together

A snippet of the great man and how even as a goal keeper you had seven bells knocked out of you.

A pleasure to have you on here Red Phil. A legend for both our clubs. Us City fans of a certain age are trying to organise a minute's applause before kick off Saturday. Not sure if it's going to happen but it certainly would be appreciated. I hope both chairmen can get it sorted. Would be a fitting tribute to a total legend of our clubs and should happen. Anyway hope you and your fellow fans have a great day out at Bradford, we are a friendly bunch you will see. Hope to toast with your fans the greatest goalie ever to wear both our shirts. Looking forward to our biggest test of the season, but a great game and whatever the result either way would be a great testament to the best keeper both our clubs ever had . And the link with Darbs as well is very fitting. Both are gentlemen. All the best on your visit Phil. Your welcome anywhere as far as 99.9 percent of us City fans are concerned to raise a glass to him.

Sad to hear about Peter Downsborough, he helped win the league cup final with 3rd division Swindon against Arsenal in 1969 and joined us in 1973. Was a great keeper and played until 1980, was a star of our FA cup run to the quarter finals in 1975/6 and our promotion in 1976/7. A true City great R.I.P Peter.

My first keeper too and along with Ces Podd and Joe Cook, my first real hero.
It was that FA Cup run, that stopped me following Leeds and started me supporting a proper club!!pns1945, Old city man, SelbyFan and 1 other person like this. -
Slight factual inaccuracy on the website as I believe it was Southampton who knocked us out of the cup (we beat Norwich).
It is always sad when one of your heroes passes away, a drawback of getting old unfortunately.Wakefield Bantam, Budgie, Old city man and 1 other person like this. -

As you get older memories tend to fade but the odd player stands out and without doubt Peter Downsborough did, I can assosiate with all the previous comments, ironically he was another great player and Yorkshire lad we got from Swindon.

One of my favourite City players of all time. When we were crappier than usual (which is saying something) in the mid seventies it was worth going just to see him make save after save. We usually lost but we would have been hammered without him. Wish we had a keeper like him now. RIP Legend.

passing on and it's like they are a part of you and it brings home your
own mortality as age happens with the consequences it brings.
I remember when George Mulholland died and that brought very acute
memories for me.When the changing rooms were in a house on the corner
of the old kop I used to wait for the players as a kid to get autographs
and on several occasions he signed for me.One time he put his hand on my
shoulder and asked if I wanted to play for City! He was an absolute gent
and a bonus was he had really nice handwriting and you could read it!
Another strange thing was he looked like my future father in laws twin brother! -
