I'd rather have someone young and hungry like this, instead of some tired old journeyman. Problem is he's not ours so we develop him for year and then liklihood he's gone. Let's hope he gets us some goals on the way.

I like the way he wants to cut in and cause mayhem. If he succeeds in that, he'll do for me

You would hope so. But our track record with young higher league loanee strikers is pretty awful. I’m struggling to thing of any in recent years that have been a success.

Indeed. But it sounds like he’s more of a challenger for Kav or Smith’s place rather than what we really need, which is decent cover/competition for Cooky.

I doubt we will be able to find a Cookie replacement No. 9 striker that puts them away on a regular basis. They are few and far between. We might have to change the way we play up front when Cook isn’t playing.

I think he played CF in the Oxford City videos , but just behind Smith (?) at Sutton

I think that's a tactic we'll see a lot of this season. Kav was dropping really deep and trying to link the play a lot on Saturday and we've never really seen that before.

It's almost like having a Billy Clarke role back in the team but the difference being that Kav has that little bit more pace to get up alongside Cook when needed.

The other difference is that Kav doesn’t have Billy Clarke’s vision or passing ability.

Yep, I can't argue with that. It does look like he's been asked to play a similar role though in that he's more of a link up man rather than someone who runs behind.

Can’t see this lad kicking much of a ball for us unless someone leaves. I think Oliver hasn’t left yet as many clubs will not want to match his wages and unless Young is sold, we have too many players for these two positions. Surely Ibbitson is also still an option. Don’t understand this signing at all

I think that's exactly what Kavanagh is.

Even in the times he was supposed to be playing opposite Pointon (who was an out and out left winger), he just drifted in from the right into a number 10 role. I think this is why so many thought we were playing a front 2 last season, even in the games where we definitely weren't.

That's must be his natural role.

I agree, he's not a Billy Clarke-type of player, but he occupies that position.

It's a good idea to sign a different kind of forward, one who might run on.

Let's be honest, Alex Pattison was more likely to make those types of runs than Calum Kavanagh was, but to have a striker dedicated to that role will be something different.

Not trying to re-start that argument or anything about tactics because we all did it to death in the Summer, but Kavanagh just isn't a striker. Pedantically we could call him a centre forward, I guess, but he's an out-and-out 10 like Pointon is an out-and-out winger.

I think as it stands, Smith is the competition for Cook, as the two just don't work together. Both want to the spearhead.

I'm not sure Kav has the skills to be a no10. He has other attributes, but his touch, close control and vision aren't good enough for that role...in my opinion

I think he seems to be doing all right.

He was one of our better players towards the end of last season, in my opinion, anyway?
