i do but i just don't get the fan opinion that professional footballers don't want to play football. scannell, has done nothing whilst he has been at the club to suggest that he doesn't want to be here or play - it may come as a shock to some but a spinal fracture pretty much limits your ability to do much activity, let alone put the amount of strain through the joints of the body that occurs whilst playing professional sport. how many times do we see players coming back too early and then out for longer periods? look at what happened with alex jones earlier in the season; back from injury too early, subbed on and then subbed off in the same match with another injury. unless someone on here has access to scannell's or reeves' medical notes i'd suggest nobody actually has a clue. in fact, it's often the player and management that want the player to come back too early or play under injection and the medical staff are caught between a rock and a hard place by doing what's right for the players health and ability to come back at the right time, and being under pressure from their boss to sign them off as match fit. guess who gets it in the neck when they break down with injury again.. it's not the player or manager.

Not often i agree with you ramblings but this is fair comment. No player asks to suffer an injury, i’d guess Scannell would rather be out on the pitch than sat in the stands. I would note that i watched Canberra raiders versus the Melbourne Storm rugby league this morning. Half time in the changing room and there are busted players with strappings all over the place. Some players want it more it seems...

Men and boys mate as you well know having played both games, totally different mentality, as well as respect for the officials.

no rugby player plays with a fracture to the spine. strappings are often in place to support joints or cover wound dressings, no other reason. in fact, i've worked at clubs where it's been known for players to strap areas to give the opposition the impression that a certain area is injured when infact it's not, just to try and pull players to target a certain area so it opens up gaps between defensive lines - whilst the opposition targets the 'injured site' on the left, it creates a gap to the right for them to get through. don't believe everything you see.

The only way you could see the ‘strappings’ on these particular players was because the had their shirts off, the oppostion would have no way of knowing. They weren’t fake. A player might target an injury in say boxing where a fighter injures his hand, anything to gain an advantage.

wasn't sure if you were meaning elbow / wrist or knee strappings which are usually visible to opponents - and as we don't see the changing rooms at half-time in football matches we have no idea how many players may be playing with strappings under their shirt.

therefore we can't fairly compare the mentality of players from sports that have contrasting rules in terms of what is and isn't allowed, sports that place mismatched stresses on the joints of the body and simply say 'some players want it more' when we're not privy to all the information. all we're doing then is creating conjecture.

But its true that some players want it more and will play through a pain barrier that others wouldn’t. Thats not conjecture, thats part of human nature. Rugby is different to football in that you are expected to have to carry a certain amount of knocks and scrapes, it comes with the territory. Sam Burgess played a grand final
In Australia with a fractured cheekbone, likewise Shaun Edwards in the Challenge cup final. All down to what detriment the injury has on the physical capabilities of the player in question, will he be a liability to his team mates and will it but his long term health at risk.
Going back to Scannell, its down to the physio team and their assessment of the player after testing and discussion with the player himself. Each case will have differing merits, i’m sure if Scannell was deemed ready he would be more than raring to go.
