O’Donnell out for 16 games

    This is a huge blow. His performances, when the team was struggling, was impressive and he saved a number of goal bound strikes.

    I assume that we will have to sign another keeper, perhaps an under 21 from another team, otherwise it is one of our Senior Squad places and will reduce the options for other outfield players.

    Doing he’ll be too difficult to replace. Lots of decent keepers warming Championship and L1 benches

    Huge loss but a big chance for Hornby. And yet another long term muscle injury.

    If I were Sparks I'd be having a deep look into the fitness coaches and regime at the club because the amount of soft tissue injuries this season has been ridiculous.

    Agree with both those points.

    I guess that we will require a second keeper. The under 18’s keeper is Tom Donaghy, don’t know anything about him. Younger still is Darryl Ombang https://www.bradfordcityfc.co.uk/news/2020/october/rising-star-ombang-receives-england-call-up/

    That's something impacting pretty much every club in the world though. Its a combination of the increased number of matches in a short space of time, the impact the pandemic had on preseason (Many were truncated, there were less preseason matches and what preseason work they did was impacted as training techniques have had to be adjusted to reduce chances of spreading the virus) and the continued impact on the level of training both during sessions and the players doing at home.

    Mind you Man Utd have had less this season than any season since Fergie retired which is odd. Even Phil Jones is back in training

    Of course it is, but even accounting for that we've had an abnormal amount. And we've had reoccurring problems with players. Not to mention players pulling up in the first half on multiple occasions which is most concerning.

    Losing a keeper, when the squad is already capped at a maximum of 22 senior players, has a disproportionate impact. Outfield players can be played ‘out of position’, not ideal but achievable. However if a keeper is injured, then you really need a reserve on the bench, so that is three players who are capable of playing in a senior match, to a reasonable level.
    On other threads, there is talk about wholesale fresh signings. We have to operate within the Squad and Salary Cap. So does the club have 3 keepers? Perhaps one of them is the under 18, but increase the number of players and it already drains the defined salary pot.

    Perhaps a change of direction for Kurtis Guthrie!;)

    Big blow this in my opinion. He has been one of the most consistent performers this season, I never understood some fans wanting him to be dropped a few weeks ago.

    I hope Hornby can step up and prove his worth now, he has had to be patient since signing for us, now is his big chance to claim the spot for the rest of the season.

    Maybe Turnbull and the management duo have other ideas though and target a loan keeper to come in as number one?

    Either way, it is imperative that we bring someone in

    Yep he is one of their 5 Under 23 keepers. Two appearances for the Under 23’s conceded 8 goals. Otherwise a bench warmer. So..........nowhere near the 1st team, which is currently sitting 22nd! As you say massive mistake.

    Strangely given our league placement, I’m looking forward to seeing how Hornby performs in this run of games. From the limited times I’ve seen him play and read about performances, he’s done ok without been spectacularly good or bad. Reports from his loan were positive and he’s at an age where he needs games.

    O’Donnell is my absolute first choice GK, however this opportunity for Hornby could actually turn out to benefit both club and player.

    Put it this way, I have far greater concerns of back up in other positions in our starting XI than in goal!

    Agreed. Hornby has been a bench warmer for most of his time with us and with PV previously and is desperate for first team action. He will have one eye on securing himself a new contract either with us or someone else in the summer and will be wanting to be signed as a first choice keeper rather than backup. This is a real opportunity for him to show he is worth that - let's hope he grabs his opportunity (and the ball) with both hands.
