Our record is pretty poor with regards our climb from the fourth division to the Premier but I believe theirs tops it, of course back in those days it was 1st Division.
"Northampton Town hold the record for the shortest time taken to be promoted from the bottom tier to the top tier and relegated back down to the bottom again, in the space of nine years".

It may well be a must win game for us but unfortunately it isn't for them. They are in a very enviable position. Two points from their last 2 games and they are promoted automatically and that's assuming that either Stockport or Carlisle win both of their last two.

It's crucial that Hughes picks the right starting 11 for this game. Will the mentality be to get a point here (seeing as Mansfield lost last night), or will he go all out for the win. Nevers surely will be benched, but does he risk starting Osadebe? Personally I'd look to start Costello on the left, but this could be a risk as young attacking players tend to forget about the defensive side of the game. Will he start with Derbyshire? Possibly, but would it be better bringing him on later in the game? Whoever starts they have to be on it from the off. 8/9 out of 10's is going to be needed to get anything from this. Let's just hope that the pressure of them needing a win will affect their game more than ours.

I actually think we will beat them to force us to dream the impossible again :(
I just hope he just goes for it if we fail then at least we have 2 more chances to nail it ........... would rather it all done and dusted before the Orient game

Weirdly, I'm more confident of beating Northampton than I was Swindon or Gillingham.

Has to go for it. This is a huge test of the team, it's the most pressure they've had all season as this one is now becoming a bit more must win than they would have envisioned even 10 days ago. If we fail to win this one, I fear for the play offs. I don't want to go to Crewe with it being must win as Crewes home record is pretty good, 10 home games this season and lost just 2 but they've won 3 on the spin at home scoring 9 goals. Whereas our away record isn't as good as people assume, just 1 win in the last 5 away trips which was to bottom of the league and we didn't score in 3 of those 5. Then entertain the champions.

Northampton are the walking wounded at the minute. Hoskins is having to play right wing back for the season, the rest of their 5 man defence last week was Norman Jr on his 4th start of the season (subbed at HT), the 20 year old Max Dyche who had just his 3rd start of the season and Sherring who has been a main defender and Ryan Haynes who had just his 13th start of the season. Just 1 experienced defender marshalling a back line which has one of the leagues best attackers playing wide and inexperienced lads. They took off one of them at HT last week and brought on a DM to play in the centre of defence as it was a better option. One of their midfielders was a young lad on just his 8th start. The strike force is great still, but this team is so bundled together at the minute, they will leave it open for chances. If Cook can get on the younger lads, bully them a bit and the attackers fill the space, this is a team to be attacked.

Yet despite all their injuries they’re still finding ways to win. Compare that to our relatively full squad and we struggle at Swindon, Newport and Walsall away, Gillingham and Hartlepool at home.

They will be shitting themselves as they know only a win will get them promoted.
A draw is no good and will need them going to Tranmere for a point to go up.
A draw for us ends our hopes but opens the door for Stockport and Carlisle who both have superior GD to Northampton.

I don’t think Nevers is defensively robust enough and not sure Osadebe is what we need out wide. With Derbyshire best used as an impact sub, I agree costelloe could be ready for a recall. We can use his pace as an outlet, too, if under the cosh.

I think we will win both our next two and be set up for a final day show down with at least three teams on 78 points and able to overhaul Northampton on GD if they drop points at Tranmere. Despite their form, Tranmere is not an easy place to go, they have a squad who will be looking for redemption and a manager looking for a contract.

My hopes are tiny but I still have them. By 5pm on Saturday I'll be battered from an afternoon out in Manchester, but as I've said before, we have won every match this season when I've been on the lash in our venerable neighbour's place.

If he's fit, I would start Oliver & Cook. Smallwood, Gilliead & Walker behind them and Clayton (if fit) sat in the quarterback role. Revert to Platt & Stubbs in CD.

That means Smallwood on the left of a diamond though and I thought his performances there were largely horrific.
