This coming season, clubs are now allowed to name up to seven substitutes and can use five in a game.

Brilliant. Even easier to waste time for visiting teams to VP.

That won't be frustrating in the slightest.

Ridiculous. Yet another rule to benefit the mega rich clubs at the top of the PL who can afford to have entire squads full of international players.

I heard a discussion on this a while ago (maybe on the Price of Football podcast?) and whoever it was who was talking about it said that the statistics showed that the advantage generally went to the weaker teams in the division. The reason put forward was that there was a much greater difference in talent between a starter at a "big club" and the 5th substitute than there was at a smaller club. However, fast forward a few years and I'm not sure that logic will still be valid if teams are regularly using 16 players during a match because it'll make it easier to give more players game time and keep them happy.

    This is an EFL ruling

It's an IFAB decision, the PL is 5 from 9
Today the EFL voted for 5 from 7

Is there a restriction about the number of times changes can be made? Isn't it three times in Internationals?

Fair point but equally can be used by us when we are leading and want to kill a game off late on.

Oh great, time wasting at 1 0 up away to Barrow and paying £20 for the privilege.

    Halcyon days approaching.

Opta have been collecting "ball in play" stats for the PL since 2006 and the average length of playing time of a PL match has been between 53:25 in 2009/10 and 56:43 in 2013/14. Football fans pay a lot to watch footballers not play football.

I've never seen the absolutely disgraceful stuff we've witnessed at VP in the Premier league so I'd expect certain games to be much lower than that.

Much of it is also probably down to the poor standard of referees that aren't knowledge enough about the actual game to clamp down on it early enough.

For some reason I've a copy of one of the scouting reports that Dmitry used to post (Stevenage Home 17/8/21) and it shows that there was 49:25 minutes of play and 46:36 minutes of stoppages in 90 min (+6 min injury time). I don't know if that's average for us but it'd be really easy to fix, all you need is someone in the stand with a stop watch and timewasting becomes totally pointless.

EDIT - just found the report from Mansfield Away, 21/8/21 and there was 47:00 min of play and 52:00 min of stoppages!

I wasn't talking about away games. I was responding to your observation of away teams at VP wasting more time than they already do. Though if we have to shithouse our way out of this division by time wasting to win @ Barrow then so be it.

You can stop the game three times per team for substitutions - not including any half-time change. That's a total of up to 4 changes of up to 5 players each.
