This looks like a good appointment to me. A new City Gent. Was Middlesbrough's head of scouting and loans.

I wonder if the 3 scouts brought in during the Adams reign will be incorporated within his team. Seems to have a good mix of experience, all be it at the same club. Good luck and welcome onboard.

Is this a sign Wilder didnt want him? Seems a big step down. Boro have been shite for years until Wilder came in.......

Praying we finally got it right but treating with caution.

It seemed to take a while to get everything in place. If Boro wanted rid I think it would have been announced sooner.

    No…

Look how MH has got players to form a team , same squad, Wilder has done the same , plus the additional recruits this chap has brought in?

Even if Wilder didn’t want him that doesn’t mean he is a bad appointment. We have taken our time to get the right fit. Always a bit of a gamble appointing staff, but if you do your homework less so.

Do you think a manager of Chris Wilders experience needs a recruitment director? He wont be dictated too surely. He will know exactly what and who he needs at that level.

Sparky will need one as he wont know the lower leagues.

    Welcome aboard Stephen.

Looks a decent appointment and it would seem we have taken our time and been patient in landing him.

Not much of a bedding in time for him as we approach a busy and important couple of months recruitment.

I like the fact that he is looking at it from a long term perspective and looking to attract younger players who can grow with the club and hopefully good enough to play at a higher level with us.

Hopefully it's the end of the journeyman player signing on at the last hour of a transfer window

Even Pep has a head of recruitment. Gone are the days of managers deciding who comes into the club.

I get your point in one respect, but that doesn’t mean he’s not any good nor not going to be a success . If he’s surplus to Boro’s new philosophy then it may be turned into a huge benefit to us. Looking at his CV then he’s got bags of experience and a tad more professional than back of a fag packet scout?

    I am more than happy.

Your caution is understandable given our past history, but I think this is more a case of Gent seeing this as an opportunity to advance his career rather than Wilder not being keen on him. His LinkedIn page shows he has been loans and scouting operations manager and head of scouting operations over the past 4 or so years. Middlesbrough brought in a new head of football last August, so I'm guessing he didn't think he'd get the opportunity to advance at Boro in the near future and has looked for opportunities elsewhere.

I agree it’s more akin to an assistant manager in the championship taking the main manager role in league 2 imo, not a step down just into a role with more leadership to progress your career. You can’t always do that at the company you’re at in any industry.

? Not sure experience counts. It's the sheer time and many clubs have one.

This new City Gent looks a great improvement on Lee(Scunthorpe) Turnbull who flitted from club to club on short term contracts.
It is interesting to note that he has a UEFA coaching licence.

People need to understand you can only judge people in what they do when appointed. All that matters is how he performs here.

If it doesn’t work out then we get rid.

Agree. Ad lets be honest, none of us will know anything about this fella. Whats key, is whether he and Hughes are backed. Investing in scouting and data analytics to target players more effectively is something we've needed for a long while. Ultimately though it all comes down to money, and whether we're prepared to invest in targeting a better quality of player than we have been

Well it would be strange if we all did know a great deal about him. What we can say is that he is well qualified for the post. He has plenty of relevant experience at a very good level. He must also have hit it off with Mark Hughes. On all these counts I think it is fine to be optimistic about the impact he will have at City. There is little point in making such an appointment unless you are going to follow it up with financial support. So I am optimistic on that front too.
