Long throws in being treated as de facto corners by officials is the one EFL should stamp out.

And I'm the same vein, how do you decide a keeper shouldn't fall over when catching the ball?

I agree with the sentiment but it's not the answer as it's subjective. The answer is to stop the clock when the ball is dead and add the time the ball is in the keepers arms as dead.

A linesman only marks half of the field. They could be 40 yards away from the throw in and the ref could be 70 yards away if it's a big hoof?

they could. But most of the time they might not be. But it should stop all the messing at the throw in

The game now is so much faster than it was. You could say that it is field athletics played by footballers! The distance and speed of the game is immense. When referees, especially at EFL League 2 level are, as I understand it semi professional, they inevitably wont have a comparable level of fitness. VAR helps in the Premiership (it also kills the pace of the game), then the introduction of say two Assistant Refs/Lines person could help to monitor blind side fouls and monitor throw ins far better than the current system.

That is correct that all league 1 and 2 officials are part time with and referee alongside a normal weekday job. Tom Neild is an NHS nurse as well as a referee. If players were part time they wouldn't be at the standard they are. It also doesn't help that fans now have access to iFollow which gives an immediate replay that they can watch over and over when the referee get 1 look. At all levels what doesn't change is that referees get used as a scapegoat for teams losing as shown in the Europa League final. Extra assistant referees is a long way off as there is already a shortage of officials so where are they coming from and who's paying for them?

If you give 1 foul for shirt pulling you can guarantee there are 4 or 5 other players pulling shirts, there's only so much the officials can see and if both teams are pulling you are better off letting it go. When 1 is given you can guarantee people will pop up with "if you give a penalty for that you'll be giving 10 a game". It's a common theme around the world that every fan think's their referees are the worst but the reality is they aren't, fans just focus on mistakes and ignore good decisions which there are plenty more of.

Bradford City's 1911 cup winning side only had two English players (both from Nottingham).

Looking at your last sentence, then the game has to move with the times. I a not sure if League 1/2 officials get a retainer, but they do get a match fee, plus expenses. As to who is paying for them, then the FA/EFL should make the funds available. If that means some of the cost is borne by the clubs so be it. No one says who is paying for the extra cost of say 1 player or the additional costs if utilities increase, the clubs have to budget for it. The modern game has evolved, the way it is referred needs to reflect that.

Currently referees in league 1 and 2 are paid a match fee plus expenses only. If they go full time it's got to be worth it for them. Premier League referees are on between £35,000-£45,000 retainer plus £1,200 per match as referee (4th official and VAR are on less). Championship referees are on the same retainer but only £600 per match, in the Championship only referees are full time, the assistant's are part time still. Realistically to convince referees to give up their full time job they would be needing a retainer fee similar, there are approximately 40 National List referees so you would be looking at £1.2mil at least per season on referee retainer fees alone then added to that you need the assistant referees then there's the cost of extra training camps like the select group 1 and 2 official have every other week. If clubs really wanted full time referees I think there would have been a lot more noise about it.

If League 1&2 Referees are part time and their assistants, then increasing the number is not going to be such an onerous financial burden on the FA/EFL. Increasing the match fee for officials, but allowing them to pursue a career, may make the role more attractive.
In games, so much now occurs on the blind side of the referee and having assistant referee’s who are level (ish) with the ball on both sides could reduce a lot of hidden fouls.
