Where do we start and finish with this? Are West Yorkshire police going to be looking for fans calling Steve Evans character into question? Do Leeds fans get upset and complain about Jimmy Saville being labelled as 'one of your own'?
Personally its not something i get involved in yet i remember two city fans at Swindon calling Drysdale some absolutely obscene things. Where is the line drawn at what is termed 'football banter' and something that the police decide to want to get involved?

It has no place in football. It's mocking and making a joke out of defenseless babies being murdered. Imagine if the parents of one of them babies was in the crowd and heard it. Banning tragedy chanting at football shouldn't just be limited to football tragedies

The moral stance is great. In reality though it's unworkable.

And where do you stop? Once you've made England a moral bastion do you tackle racism in Eastern Europe or homophobia in the Arab nations?

I'm not suggesting any of it is correct, I'm just saying that your urinating in the wind if you think you can single out and stop offensive chanting.

I also believe it's unworkable when pretending that they will criminalise it as an offence. We can't even convict the majority of people guilty for theft so this will rank way down in everyone's priority I would think.

This isn't about other countries, this is about what we do in this country

Would this extend to people singing chants about Jimmy Saville and Leeds fans? Chants about Steve Evans and paedophilia? I agree in principle that chants in bad taste aren't something I want to really here but what is the line of acceptability?

Why? Is it only offensive if it's sung in England?

Chants about any tragic event should be banned, yes.

What action do you expect our police to take against people in other countries?

You haven't answered the one about Steve Evans? Should he be subjected to vile chants regarding being called a paedophile and a nonce? Cos that's what gets chanted when he comes here as an opposition manager.

You're the one suggesting bans on chanting and given that a large part of the example given happened in Wales then I'm just wondering why you're selective in which countries you're including?

Laws like that would be set by the UK government. If for any reason that couldn't be done then the FA can ban them and force clubs to ban fans who chant things like that or discipline the clubs like they do with pitch invasions.

The one I remember vividly is a large group of City fans singing about cockle pickers at Morecambe many years back. Very distasteful but criminal?

Really quite easy this. CCTV now has great capability to pick out individuals in a crowd and Police have mobile cameramen at games that can also pick up audio. Pick a few knobheads chanting at random, arrest them and then publicly shame them.

Perhaps a better use would be outside our supermarkets given the current state of shoplifting.....

    To add to this,

Dale Houghton, from Rotherham, was arrested on Saturday (September 30) after reports of two men displaying an image of six-year-old Sunderland fan Bradley Lowery, who tragically lost his life to cancer.

He has since been charged and pleaded guilty calling it "enjoyable banter".

Well he has been banned from Hillsborough, he has lost his job, his sunday league side have kicked him out and he is awaiting sentance from the magistrate courts which will see either a fine or up to 6 months in jail. Then there is the shoeing he will probably get from Sunderland fans if he ever crosses their paths again.

His parents must be hugely embarrassed by all of this too. I mean he is 31 not 15.

hopefully he gets the 6 months in jail, how on earth can anyone think that the death of a child be enjoyable banter. this piece of crap deserves to be jailed and make him serve his sentence in a prison in the north east

He will likely see the inside of a prison cell as it looks like an example is to be made out of this. I think it was only a few weeks ago that there was a big piece on disaster chanting in the news.

I doubt this lad at this moment can go to the pub, his mates probably don't want to see him, his football team have disowned him and his parents must be beyond embarrassed so punishment in effect is already been handed out.
