I am having a debate on one of there forums about this game and the cordons put up around the game.

They seem to think it was due to police worrying about ticketless fans turning up i was in the mind that it was in the wake of Hillsborough:(

Anyone on here shed any light ???
Just got me thinking we had a fair few high profile games that season without cordons.

Just had it in my head that it was a reaction to Hillsborough

Wasn't it more of a reaction to Man City being able to go up that day and a shed load of fans turning up. Would it even have been all ticket back then ?

I remember going to Blackburn, poss same season, and not getting in as the away end was full and it hadn't been all ticket.

Deffo all ticket and we had a membership scheme at the time so i think getting tickets was rock hard unless a City fan sold you it

Can’t answer your question exactly but they only needed a point to get promoted.

They were very well supported that year (25000 average home crowd) so will have travelled in big numbers all season.
I suspect the reason was due to the numbers travelling but can’t be 100% sure.

Crowd was only 12,479 (capacity only 16,000 then)

I got to Blackburn that day (possibly boxing day)and queued to the turnstiles only for them to close as we were ready to enter . Had to listen on the radio on the way home

There was a small group of Man City supporters that somehow got tickets for the Kop and were stood near the bottom. I think my Dad was happy they got the point they needed in the end as they were not the brightest bunch, and it could have turned nasty if they’d lost.

I remember it kicked off a bit the year before at Maine Road when we drew 2-2, but doubt that was enough to justify a cordon.

I would guess that concerns about ticketless fans and concerns following the then recent Hillsborough disaster would be the reason.

Nothing to do with the point you made but I think that was the game in which the great Sam Barkis was there, he played for both Man city and Bradford city. The sad thing was he died later that year.

Brings back some fond memories. Pitch was not that good then either, even as a championship level club.

Thought the same we had a lot more high profile games

    Leeds in the league
Everton and Bristol City in the league cup
Spurs and Hull in the FA cup without a cordon had a feeling that it was in place for the Hillsborough reason.

Amazing how some folk aim the blame on the pitch to the current set up when weve had issues for decades with it.
Remember the play off game against Blackpool 1996 when it was like a beach.

Mid 70's when i started going to city. It was no snooker table, more akin to a potato field.

Apparently mud is good for the skin.
Maybe there is a marketing opportunity there.
    Valley parade beauty mud.
Could probably get a few thousand jars from what they take of the pitch at the end of the season.

A lot of pitches weren't very good in those days, especially at that stage of the season even at top flight clubs.
